and thats where i am right now. i have a 5.7 marine short block that needs new jugs, not sure on the floor. thinking of doin some rot doc on it, and recoating it with glass cloth and resin. getting rid of the lounger seats and going with a captains chair with wrap around. if you have any tips, let me know, as this is my first time.

I think you're off to a great start. That will be a super nice boat fixed up. If I were you, I would replace the whole deck. Now, I'm not just saying that because it's the "proper" way to do it (although it is) so hear me out..... You have a 20' with a V8 sitting on an immaculate trailer and you're going to be replacing the interior. When you're done you're going to have a new looking $10k boat on your hands. So I definitely think it would be worth pulling the whole deck, inspecting the stringers, and reinstalling a properly sealed and glassed deck. Why half-a$& it? Good luck with your project.

i have thought about that. i guess im just nervous about pullin up the deck. i dont want to have to pull the top cap. or all the other wood parts like the front storage, as its in great shape.

I don't think you'd have to pop the cap unless the transom is shot which you'd have seen by now since you have the motor out.

sending the boat out to have the floor replaced. they will be pullin old floor up, and puttin new down. i will have the task of sealing the top side (their going to do the underside) they say it should take 2 weeks to do it. they will be contacting me if they find anything questionable. i thought it was a good deal for 800$. pics to come when i get it back!

kartman,
Even with the problems, that's a very nice boat for the $ you paid. :)
Good luck with the project.
Have a great day.

Nice boat, I assume you are not pulling it around with the neon, as it has a hitch on it.

lol, we thought about doin it, but no. the wife bought an awd mercury mountaineer. although we used to pull our old 15' glastron with the neon. it killed the tranny, and the motor mounts. i let it go for 900$. (the neon, not the boat)

Re: 99 bayliner 2050

well, i decided against having someone else do the floor for me. started the tear out tonight. found out that bayliner has some crappy ideas of enclosing wood with glass. so i will be fixing all of their bad mistakes.

right now im using a 4" scraper and a 7 1/2" circular saw, and a pry bar.

anyone have ideas to get the floor up faster?? its a pita with how far i got so far. will i need to cut the seat bases out before i cut out the floor. how close can i get to the sides of the boat before i start to cut into/ a hole in the hull? and how do you get the wood to seperate from the foam without tearin the foam all up??

sorry for all the questions, but this is my first resto (even if its a 99)

Re: 99 bayliner 2050

Hello kartman,
I think you will be glad you decided to do it yourself in the long run. you will at least know how it goes back together.
I would get everything off the floor you can. My seat boxes were easy to remove. I just picked them up and through them out of the boat then removed the screws.:(. way to much rot.
As for the foam sticking to the wood. Nothing will help you with that one. foam will stick to wood very well, maybe you could slide something thin under the flloor to cut it loose, but that is about the only thing.(sorry)
How close to the hull you can cut depends on your skill with the tools. if you set your saw at the same angle as the hull you should be able to get pretty close. Just make sure you set your blade depth to cut only the thickness of the ply or maybe a little less. It also depends on your pucker factor.:p

They may have only tabbed the floor to the hull. If thats the case you won't need to cut very deep to get it loose.

I have bought some new tools I'm going to try to use this weekend, if it will stop raining. You can see the tools in my photo buckett.
I'm not an expert but this is what I'm going to try.
Good luck.

the only thing that im not sure of, is around the dash. it has a fiberglass panel that comes down to the deck. any ideas on getting the old floor out, and the new floor in without tearing it, and the front bow storage out of the boat? everything from here forward in the boat is in great shape.

at least the stringers are good!

I had the same problem, with the bow section. I ended up splitting the boat, removing the top cap. Tons of fun.:p. really it wasn't to bad.
I had to remove it to get at the deck at all, including removing the carpet.
Good luck.

If everything from that point of the boat and forward is fine, then prep it for some glass and resin and seal it well, and don't continue with the destruction. Then repace everything from there back, that way you will not need to remove the cap...

im thinking that is what i will do as i am not setup to pull the cap. ( top of the windshield is 1' from the celing of the garage.) im thinking of making the seat wrap around into a playpen bow,and molding it all in fiberglass. kind of like this but not so home made looking. more curved and shapely like the boat

Now that would be pimp!!! Did I use that word correctly? I am trying to be more "up to date" as my new 19 year old employee says.

Re: 99 bayliner 2050

ya, my younger brother says that and "thats gonna be dope" i guess im starting to get old.

im trying to make it a better boat for water sports. as i cant really afford a $60K boat, and i have a bunch of friends that like to go out with us, the more seating, the better.

If your sweating so much..........TAKE THE SWEATER OFF!!!! :)

Sweet boat man, good progress so far. Going to look very "dope" indeed. Any fiberglass cracks or heavy dings in the hull? Make sure there is no water entry through any cracks and fix them when the deck is out.

Re: 99 bayliner 2050

i haven't come across any cracks or holes in the hull. but i haven't looked at it that well yet. maybe its time to do so. should be picking up the wood to get it sized for the floor. im thinking of going with 3/4", then putting another 1/4" on the floor in the bow so its the same thickness, then covering the whole thing with 2 layers of roving and resin. im going to use 6" glass tape around the edges, and on all of the wood seams. the goal for this month is to get it all glassed in. next month, wood seat frames, for January, the sun pad, engine compartment and start on the engine. should be finishing up the engine in feb. and sending it out for upholstery in mid to late Feb. and have it back for mid to late march. now i have a time line, lets see how well i don't stick to it. it probably wont get done until mid July.
