Well the block ended up being cracked on my 99 glastron (LONG LONG story and lesson learned from dealership/worst customer service ever) anyways I need a small block for my boat. It currently has a 5.0L Volvo Penta with a 305 GM block. Im wondering what all will swap into this thing without having to get new heads, intake, carb etc...my buddy has a 305HO from an 87 camaro and a guy at work has a fresh rebuilt 350 out of a 92 chevy or something, could I consider using these for the swap? If not where can I find a good reputable rebuilt 305 short block online/local to Fort Worth, Tx for a reasonable price? Thanks - Josh

I researched this exact same thing some time back. I'm no expert, but here's my understanding:

Your 99 Volvo 5.0 is a Vortec motor. Those 87 and 92 motors you are considering are NOT Vortec motors. This means you will need a whole bunch more parts because bolt patterns on manifolds, etc will not line up. BUT you are proposing using your own Vortec heads? This I think is OK if you ONLY use the short blocks in question. Then again I'm not sure of the advisability of putting 5.0 heads on a 5.7 shortblock...

If I recall advice I was given earlier, the best option for this sort of thing is to find a Vortec 5.7L and take the opportunity to power up a bit. I can't recall the exact cutoff when the Vortecs came out, but I'm thinking it's somewhere around 1996???

Others here will know for sure.

I was told to find myself a junkyard 5.7L vortec LONGBLOCK...not shortblock. Heads and all. This was reportedly the cheapest/easiest swap for such a setup. Probably out of a Suburban or Silverado of the late 90's.

I'm not sure exactly what your failure is, but if it's freezing...how do you know for sure your heads are OK?

Hopefully others chime in to clear up what I'm mudding up...
