99 Johnson 150 - Exhaust Stinks of Gas/Oil

I sea trial'd a boat today with a 1999 Johnson 150, 2 stroke - oil injected. She ran fine and compression tested fine too. The only issue was that there was a strong gas/oil odor from the exhaust and a decent amount of oil sheen in the water when idling. Is this normal for this engine? I have heard that these engines are not the most efficient consumers of fuel but the odor was worse than what I have experienced with other engines.

Hi Sage and welcome to iboats.

It sounds more like a fuel leak to me than not burning the fuel in the engine. Did you notice any wet areas inside the lower engine pan?

Take a look around in there Sage. Look for leakey hoses or any kind of fuel leak. The bowls are made of plastic and are prone to warpage. This may be the source of the sheen. With the hood off, pump up the bulb and hold some pressure on it to pressurize the fuel system. Look for any leaks.

Just trying to rule out the easy stuff first... :)

How do I get in there? Where is the engine pan? Gosh - sorry for the naive questions but is that an easy task for a mechanically minded person with no experience with OBs?

Just take the motor hood off. The engine pan is the lower pan the engine sets in. With the hood off, you can see the carbs and the fuel lines and pump. Just look for dripping fuel when you squeeze the primer bulb.

Thanks OBJ - I don't own the boat yet but will check this out and report back.

I have heard enough so far to support the theory that this is just part of owning a 2-stoke.

Yeah - the engine had not been run since last summer. We ran it briefly in the yard before putting in but it could also have been winterizing fluids etc. coming out. Curious thing is that we ran it in the harbor for a good 1/2 hour and then back at the dock it still reeked of gas and had the oil sheen. Does it take a while for the winterizing fluids to blow out?
