Hey....new to this forum and indeed to personal boat ownership although have several years history/experience in Her Majesty's finest.
I'm looking at getting a CC to cruise around and fish/play etc. with the family and have found one that fits the budget.
It has a '99 Ocean Pro 150 - did a quick search last night and found a wealth of info/blogs/reviews etc. regarding Fitch/carbs/OMC......
Can someone give me a synopsis of this motor: pros/cons - watch out for...I've requested the exact model# from the seller.
Thanks in advance....

that motor is a carbed motor,
BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old

Re: '99 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro.....

Thanks Tashasdaddy - good info. So, in general, this is a good o/b as long as periodic maintenance has been completed and the unit has been looked after - as with any electro-mechanical kit.....
The seller appears reputable - Yacht Broker in Punta Gorda - but I'll certainly find out more. The visible inspection tips are great and I will certainly ask for a trial of the o/b, ideally in the drink but if not then certainly in a barrell.

Thanks

the 99 115 hp, is base off the good old reliable V4 base. again, maintenance, and inspection, properly cared for they are almost bullet proof. they have been around with modifications since the late 1960's.

Isn't the '99 115HP V6 a 60* Loop charged motor? It is quite a newer design than the old V4 90* crossflow, and most will say the newer design is quite a bit better.

Re: '99 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro.....

thanks all - this really is a truly helpful site/forum.....although I don't want to feel like I'm asking only obvious questions that could be researched - suppose they're only obvious if you know the answer!

Any top hints on a used 1998 Mercury 150? Is there a web-site that shows reviews etc. for used engines/hulls by simply plugging in the year, make and model???

Thanks again folks, much appreciated....

HMS, You might ask your Merc question on the Merc forum.

BTW- I have a '93 Merc 135HPV6. The '98 you are asking about is quite similar. I find it to be a good, strong running motor.

Thanks Chris - good point, still new to this malarky. So many questions and concerns buying a used boat - I'm pretty sound mechanically but it's o/b history and geneology that fails me.....I guess reputable dealer and extended warranties are the way ahead to reduce a possible $$ heartaches....

Cheers
