Re: 99 Merc 125 2S OI Bluewater(?)
I have a 3 cyl version of that engine (non-BW) and it is a fine engine and has been very reliable for me other than a stuck shut thermostat that I inherited with the used motor....learned of that problem on my own, but that can happen to any engine.
The higher hp engines are 4 cyl and had a feature where they killed 2 cylinders at the lower rpm's....2500 I think was the number. Personally I didn't like the idea, but they have been in production for a lotta years and sold a bunch of them and you don't hear much about problems with that.
Performance and fuel efficiency on mine are excellent and would definitely buy the engine again. Since they are essentially the same design with one more cylinder added I'd assume the same for the 4's and dropping 2 cyl should make slow speed operation (trolling) much more efficient. Would assume the BW just has more SS where corrosion could be a problem and maybe more Zinc sacrificial plates.
