I've been following posts on iboats forum for some time. Finally, I've got a question.

I've got a '99 Merc 40ML tiller control, pull start (serial # OG876642) that I would like to convert to remote steering control from a console. I don't necessarily need electric start, but is it practical to have a pull start with a remote steering set-up?

I called Merc techs, who informed me that to convert to remote control the only part I need is the Steering Link Rod Assembly Kit # 19608A14 ($106.80 list) for the throttle, shift and steering to which I would connect a Teleflex system.
Also, Electric Start Kit # 50-822462A5 ($377.90 list) if I choose to do the electric start.

Is there more to this conversion and can the average backyard mechanic do it?
Thanks, beachd

Re: '99 Merc 40 tiller - convert to remote

I was hoping for any input from the experienced members on this conversion...I'm new to the board and I did a search for similar issues prior to posting with no luck.
Do I just order the parts as reviewed with the Merc Tech Dept Rep (he seemed a little unsure) or is there more to this conversion.
Is there a control box of some sort required, etc.
Most importantly can I do the conversion (any pitfalls I should be aware of) or is it better left to an o/b engine pro.
Thanks, beachd

Make sure that you get a gear shifter and throttle control box, and make very sure that you get the charging system, if it does not come with the electric start system. I have never converted one like you are wanting to do, alway the opposite. Hope this helps.

Thanks alot...I'll follow up w/ Merc Tech dept on that control box.
Is the throttle / shifter conversion from tiller to remote something a mechanically inclined backyard mechanic can do?
Beachd

beachd-let's go over what you need.first,to connect the teleflex system(prox $150)to your engine you need the $107 link rod kit.then, for throttle and shift you need a control box-these come in a variety of styles..side mount, binnacle mount, panel mount(prox $200 for one with harness for electric start,$150 for throttle/shift/emergency stop only)then you need your throttle and shift cables at prox $30 each.then,if you decide to add your elec. start you'll need a keyswitch-you can buy a control box with a keyswitch(prox $225).And,yes the average guy can do it but go look and a couple remote set-ups that are in place and do your homework before purchasing.

Thanks for the replies, I will definitely verify all items necessary and will probably do the cabling, mounting and all basic work...but I will have someone else, 'in the know', finalize the connections, adjustments, etc just for safety's sake.
Thanks again,
beachd
