I just started my boat with the muffs in my yard because it has been starting hard after running for a while. It starts but dies, and dies at idle. However i just noticed that the stream of water coming out the back of the outboard is rather inconsistent, especially when i rev the engine high and then back off, at one point it almost went 2 seconds or so without spitting out any water at all. Could i need a new water pump? could that be the cause of my motor stalling out at idle? if so can someone tell me which water pump i need for my motor?

All of the water coming out the tell-tale has gone through the t-stats. If you're supplying gold water on the muffs with no load on the engine, it would be pretty normal to have an intermittent stream.

The most useful instrument on these cooling systems is a water pressure gauge.

hope it helps

my gauge reads 0 psi sometimes to. I dont know if it was just because of the muffs as well or what?

It could be sprung against the low stop a bit, or it could be reading zero.

If it takes a couple of pounds to get it off the pin, then it could be normal. If it floats off easily like it should, then it is not.

hope it helps
