my lower unit went out and am planning to rebuild myself i have replaced waterpump before but have never messed with lower unit gears, clutches, ect. i had this done 2 years ago and cost about $800 just need to do it cheaper. also what about aftermarketparts vs omc parts?

Have you looked into E-Bay for a replacement lower unit? Perhaps that definately would be the cheapest way to go. I have had so much luck with replacement parts from Boaters parting out their motors on E-Bay. They drop cylinders or blow their outboards and part out the carbs, lower units etc. Check it out. You will save lots of money. Some E-Bay people even have "make best offer" on their Outbord parts to make a quick buck or need the cash toward a new out board engine. Good Luck!
