Well, I broke down and bought a new fuel pump for my 1999 Yamaha 90HP 2 stroke. My old pump is still working fine but my question is this: go ahead and put new pump on and keep old pump for a spare or wait for old pump to die? You guys got any ideas on the life of these pumps? Thanks for any thoughts on this!

Since you already have it, It just depends on whether you would prefer to change it out on the water or on the trailer at home. A little preventive maintenance at home is a lot easier and less disturbing than interrupting a fishing trip in the middle of nowhere.
The old one could last another 10 years. but not likely.
With the new fuels, I have no idea how long they will last, but you can roll the dice and see how long yours will.

99yam40,thanks for your thoughts on this, think I'll go ahead and put the new one on and save the old one for a spare. The idea of doing motor repairs in the middle of the river not too appealing. I still wonder what the average, normal life is on one of these diaphragm pumps, or is it like a light bulb, just goes out one day when it gets ready? Thanks again!

I really think most of them are replaced when trying to diagnose a motor problem and there is nothing wrong with them. If the proper testing is done then that could be eliminated. My 1999 C40 still has the one that I bought it with ( of coarse I am the 3rd owner so I do not know if it has been replaced before) and so does my 1985 35 Johnson. But like I said with the new fuels who knows if the diaphragms will hold up. I have read that the larger motors tend to need them replaced more often

Well, I put the new one on today, kept the old one for a spare. No harm done for a little peace of mind on the river. I guess 11 years is O.K. for the pump.
