Sometimes gauge reads accurately...meaning when drive is down, the gauge reads in the "down" position. Other times the gauge will read at the "quarter mark" when the drive is in the down position...only utilizing a portion of the gauge. Its almost like it reads two different settings when setting the trim. I have adjusted the sending unit per merc manual... only to behave correctly some of the time. Advice on what to look for first or test before having to replace (understand that they are replaced as a set and have to pull the drive.....

I've never had one which worked exactly the same way every time except when it was new. The trim sender is a variable resistor and corrosion builds up and then it starts jumping around. I tap the one on my cruiser and it will show 1/2 up, tap again and it shows 1/4 up. Only use mine to give me an idea the drive is down. All other up functions are by feel and sound or the engine while on plane.

If you want it to act correctly you need to replace it, then some time later you will probably be doing it again
