Hello all....

I love to read the step-by-step accounts here of you guys re-building your hulls; replete with pictures. Many of you are so skilled...and so willing to share your knowledge.

I've been thinking of how great it would be to have a similar forum for Engine Rebuilding and Restoration: Step by step accounts with pictures and tech-tips.

Do any of you think that would be a good idea? If so; please let the iboats team know!

Thanks!

Chuck

we have some really GREAT mechanics on this forum. guys that can trouble shoot you from 1000 miles away....and be bang on.

Hiya Oops....

Yes; I know that there are a bunch of engine rebuilding threads mixed around in the various forums. I enjoyed "FrankenMerc"... :)

But; that is my point. Would it be better to have a separate forum for those; one for I/O rebuilds; one for outboard rebuilds etc....

That would make them easier to find...and would perhaps lead more people to go to all the work of photographing and posting their day-by day progress if they felt that a lot of people were interested in reading it?

For me; right now...my primary interest would be outboards....

Ayuh,... Most of Us here are Mechanics, Not Photo-Journalists....
Perhaps You'd like to volunteer to do Your motor...

As far as the I/O forum goes,...
Don is kept pretty busy just stopping folks from posting to ancient threads Now,...
But,...
If you wanta do a complete, start to finish Rebuild, maybe He'll pin it to the top of the forum...

I guess that the original intent of my original post in this thread was mis-understood.

I wasn't asking anyone who hadn't already done so (or had already planned to do so) to work up an Engine Rebuilding and Restoration thread for my benefit.

I was asking if perhaps i-boats might create a separate area to place such threads in the future. That way; someone who has gone to all that trouble will have a special place on i-boats to share their efforts. Much like the Boat Restoration posts have a special home here....

The boat re-building threads are used because there is no manual to guide anyone.

Engine or drive rebuilds have or should use a manual. Parts manuals have a diagram.
It's pretty cut-n-dry...trouble-shoot, disassemble, clean, re-assemble in reverse order with X replacement part, torque to spec..

The engine threads are within the boat rebuilding threads, along with the trailer restorations.

The mod or mods have enough to do without adding and maintaining a new category for engines, drives, trailers, tow vehicles etc.

It would just be a matter of adding a sub category like the finished boats folder in this section, I don't see how that would be any harder to deal with, especially if threads were moved to that section once they were completed.

The other thing I like about that idea, is that you'd have a dedicated area to go and view engine tear downs, rebuilds and those with the knowledge would most likely point out things that a manual isn't going to cover, tips...tricks of the trade, how to get by without a specialty tool, etc.

I think it would be a good forum/sub forum.
I like to read restoration threads no matter what they are.

I kinda thought you see one tear down and build you have seen them all, but this might be a great ideal. It could show someone how an oddball engine is built like the 470. It would also showcase some great work that many put into an engine.

I think it would be cool. Some people rebuild engines diffrent. Some people screw engines, some modify engines, some people rig engines to work a certain way.....yeah why not have a forum or subforum. I remember a couple of rebuilders here asking where could they find on how to rebuild a 3.0. It would be nice also to see experimental engines. Im starting to dig this.

Re: A 2011 Wish: A forum for Engine Restoration? Would iboats Consider Trying That?

Engine restorations are a lot less common than boat restorations because quite frankly (no pun intended), it's not something the average boat builder/restorer considers within the restoration scope.

The FrankenMerc wasn't a resto at all. I built that motor almost entirely out of scrap parts I found on eBay and junk yards. It cost me tons more than it should have.

I'd have to vote no on a separate engine resto forum because it would be hard to tell the info in the q&a motor forums and the resto forums apart. It's already hard enough to separate fact from fiction in that arena.

.

I gotta go with this one. If you stick with the genuine manuals (Like Mercury, OMC, etc) they'll spell everything out pretty well. They cost a bit more than say..Chiltons, Seloc, etc but you get what you pay for there I think.
