Once again 94 Evinrude V-4 90 hp

Previous owner told me he changed the leg oil this season. I am not trustworthy. How do I check the leg oil??

Also, the water I will run is very muddy. How should I rinse out the leg when I am done.

Thanks again

I have orered a manual, but it's not here yet.

If you are uncertain as to when the lower unit oil was last changed,I recommend draining and refilling with new.Drain by removing the lower drain plug and then the upper vent plug just below the anti-ventilation plate.Note whether there is a milky color to the lube which would indicate water intrusion.

Using either OMC hi-vis or after market hi-vis lower unit lube ,refill from bottom hole until the lube weaps from the top vent hole. Then without removing the lube tip, install the upper plug and then install the lower. This method insures that no air gets trapped during the refilling process and the fill level is topped off.Your lower unit will hold about 22 oz. if I remember right. Also make sure before performing this task that you have new nylon seal washers installed on both plugs.

After engine use in muddy or salt water,it is recommended to flush the engine using an flush muff fed with city water and running the engine at idle speed for several minutes.

If you run in muddy water, you should plan to service your water pump more often than usual. A water pressure gauge might be a real worthwhile investment if you don't have one already.

Any department store that sells fishing tackle and boating stuff has these. You don't need to pay double at a marine dealer.
