A couple of problems with West Marine VHF480 radio & Garmin echthe omap 44dv & Stereo Unit

Hello, been trying to hook up my Garmin echomap 44dv chartplotter/sonar combo together to use the DSC & Chart. I'm making headway but first had a question about using the vhf radio...

*When I use the VHF radio and send out a 'Test' DSC with my MMSI number, the stereo unit just turns on automatically. Wondering why this is happening??
I'm using a well laid out fuse box. The stereo unit does have a remote, would the VHF radio frequency be possibly turning on the stereo?

*About the VHF and Garmin. On the VHF screen I get a "GPS signal ok" and can send out a DSC test and get back an acknowledgement.
Also my GPS data shows up automatically in VHF radio. Is there a way to check the chartplotter aspect of the combined units?
Or other tests I can run?

Your "stereo" probably activates itself when your VHF Marine Band radio transmits due to some sort of radio-frequency interference. Move the "stereo" and the transmitting antenna farther apart. Or, the voltage to the "stereo" may momentarily drop when the radio transmitter operates, creating a condition that causes the "stereo" to turn on.

A chart plotter that is interfaced to a DSC radio should respond to DSC data sent to it. For more information see my article

That article is part four of a lengthy examination of how digital selective calling with VHF Marine Band Class-D radios works. You may find the other three articles to be informative, too.

Generally, to test the response of a chart plotter to an incoming DSC call, you must have an incoming DSC call. That means you need a second DSC radio to test with.
