Does anyone know if you can purchase just the stbd port valve (control) for the bennett trim tab pump. Pump runs both directions and the port tab works. Run the port hose to the stbd tab and it works. Plumbed correctly and engage stbd tab motor soulds under load but tab doesn't move.

Re: A different Bennett trim tabs question

Tabman II
Thanks for your response.
To check out the system I removed the wiring at the rocker switch, ohmed out the switch and rewired correctly, someone had reversed red and yellow.
I just checked as follows: blue + green + power= motor runs, sounds like it is under load, there is 11.2 volts at pump, nothing happens at either tab.
The port tab works good.
Reversing the tubing at the pump and the symptoms swap port to stbd.

Re: A different Bennett trim tabs question

Tabman II, the previous post should read stbd to port. In other words plumed correctly the port tab works and the stbd one does not. Reverse the hoses and the stbd tab works and the port does not. There is 11.2 Volts on normal plumbing at the green wire at pump. Help!

Re: A different Bennett trim tabs question

RetNav,

Did you try hot wiring right down at the Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) or not? So far it sounds like the Stbd (Green wired) solenoid isn't getting any power to open. Please get back to me as soon as you can, so we can get you back on the water!

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas
Bennett Marine, Inc.
Client Service
trimtabs@earthlink.net
www.bennetttrimtabs.com

PS: Also, how old is the system?

Re: A different Bennett trim tabs question

Tabman II

Next to last thing I checked was hot wiring at hpu. Motor runs, sounds under load, nothing happens to tab. Disconnected green and blue wires and did continuity checks. Blue to base of solenoid (thing that operates port valve) read approx 8.4 ohms, stbd valve reads infinity. That pretty much tells me that the stbd control valve sole... (thing) coil is burned out. If you confirm, this I will be ordering that valve and one cylinder. (One of mine is sticking about half way down. Unless you can get a kit to rebuild cylinder)

Re: A different Bennett trim tabs question

Tabman II

I missed the question about age. I really don't know as I just bought the boat and am getting everything working. The boat is a 256FAC Dusky, 1990 model so I am assuming it is probably out of warranty. Either way it needs replacing to get the tabs working. :)

Re: A different Bennett trim tabs question

RetNav,

Ok, it sounds like the Stbd Solenoid Valve is open and will need to be replaced. The part number is VP1135G and it retails for $51.50 at any of your local marine dealers, catalog &/or Internet retailers. As for the actuator sticking, please tell me more about how it is sticking. Keep in mind, the standard stroke is 2-1/2", which you can check by taking a measurement of the exposed piston with the trim tab fully retracted and then take a measurement of the exposed piston with the trim tab fully deflected. The difference is the stroke of the actuator. Please give this a try and get back to me with your findings!

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas
Bennett Marine, Inc.
Client Service
trimtabs@earthlink.net
www.bennetttrimtabs.com

Re: A different Bennett trim tabs question

Tabman II,

I just measured the stroke on the port tab. You know, it doesn't take much travel to make 2 1/2 inches, does it?
I have finally found a local dealer that would order the solenoid switch and it should be here Tuesday. The dealers up here are a pain. I had to tell them where they could get the parts and when the only dealer that would try called it didn't seem to be a problem.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the assistance with this problem. Have a nice day and enjoy the pretty weather. :p :p

Now this is what I call cusomer service and standing behind your product. Very rare in todays world of get the money and run attitude.
Major Kudo's to Bennett and their customer support service.
This deffinately makes me rethink my position about using the generic el-cheepo immitators to save a buck for trim tabs. You have just earned another customer if/when I need them.
