Couple months ago, after many years faithful service, my big yella hound and loyal first mate, Dusty, passed away. I suspect a heart attack, but arthritis and dysplasia had taken a pretty big toll so maybe, he just decided it was time. You could say his last good deed was to crawl up under a bush in the back yard on a Saturday afternoon, and pass quietly without complaint, sparing us that tough decision and the dreaded one-way trip to the vet.
It was tougher than I expected -- I've lost dogs before -- guess I didn't realize how much I regarded Dusty (formally, Dusty Crockett King of the Wild Frontier) not just as a dog, but as a real friend. He was just one of those great dogs who seem to know what you're thinking even before you do. I believe he had a pretty good life for a city dog.
RIP, my friend.
Dusty's apprentice for the past three years, a westie named Scout, will step in as the new first mate. Dusty trained him well, and he's more dog than you might expect to find in such a small package.
Taking over as the new big dog (and King of the Wild Frontier), we've selected Tucker (full name Marshal Tucker), a 50/50 mix of blackmouth yellow cur and rhodesian ridgeback. I know there will never be another Dusty, but I swear this is one dam fine pup and I expect he'll do the job.
thanks for listening........
