1) Iam not sure what year it is but on the plate i can't read anything at all . The serial number listed by itself on a sticker shows OC288603 which when i looked on the serial to year i only see 7 digits on most . (Pic 1)

2) The tilt was working until just a bit ago. I wanted to lower the motor down and when i hit the switch it sounded ok but didn't move and then then started making gurgling noises . Is this a relief screw on top so i can lower it down ? Its not way up but its stuck there but the fill hole at this level is not full . I looked to see what oil to use but iam not sure . (Pic 2 and 3)

3) Theres a tube coming out in the 4th pic that is capped off but also cracked . What should i do with it and whats it for ?

Your engine comes up as:

40 40 2-cyl 0C221500 0D000749 1990 USA

From here:

http://www.marinshopen.se/Motorer/O...Mercury2takt2cyl3040hp/tabid/484/Default.aspx

The model number is 10404120D and the parts are here:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/543.cfm

This manual is for a 1994 engine but may help you to understand your system under Power Trim:

I added some fluid to the fill area , and at least it sounds good again .. but its still stuck and won't go up or down ... tried new relay also and switched them .. i will add some grease to the tilt bar just to see if i get lucky :) I also can't find anything on the "tube" in picture #3 , maybe cause iam not sure what to search for .

The motor spins but the tilt does not move. you topped it off with fluid and still the same result?

Are you sure motor is spinning? If so, then you need a hydraulic rebuild. It probably has a bit of
debris wedged up in the pump or manifold. During the process of fixing pump you'll need to make
certain that the source of debris is fixed. I can't tell from your picture if the top seal on your ram
is cracking. If it is then that's probably the root cause. They can let water in. The water sinks in
oil to lowest spot. Lowest spot is steel spool and viola! you've got rust. Rust flake comes off
and wedges into a control valve and you get the exact problem you're describing. That would
be my first guess based on the assumption that the break happened suddenly and the motor
still spins properly.

Check around for rebuild exchange or rebuild service. Any Mercury, mariner, or Force single
ram with 9/16" lower mounting pin should fit your engine. Maybe Iboats has rebuilt systems
for swap out? If not then check ebay.

Look at this link, item 2 which is attached to a hose. That should be connected to the one you are seeing in photo 3 and it should be a speedometer tube. Do you have a speedometer on your panel?

I will have a look at the schematics for the trim system in the morning and see if I can help. Does yours have a separate trim up/down switch on the cowling?

Have you managed to locate the 20amp fuse in the system to see if it is blown?

Re: A few questions about my Mercury 40 HP and tilt

That pic showed exactly what i needed , and no on a speedo in the dash .

The tilt is on one switch ,on the console , not one back at the motor . The motor is making noise , as if it would be going up or down , not sure that means its spinning .
From reading it says mercs are self bleeding . I did grease the tilt shaft but it didn't make a difference . I'll have to look for a away to remove the T and T unless theres away to manually release it so i can move it up / down to remove things .

I don't know where they have terminated the tube but you should be able to follow it from picture three up to the engine and forward.

What is that grat tube hanging out the lower side of the cowl in pic 1?

I would get a grommet in there to protect the cables as it will cut through eventually.

I have a grommet kit here to put in it :)
I got got the relief valve and iam able to now lift and raise the motor by hand .
Can the motor be making noise but not actually spinning ?

There is a white nylon nut on side of pump. It may also be black bylon on older engines. Use a very large flatblade screwdriver to back it out three turns and you may be able to manually raise and lower the engine. Do not force the nut so hard that you twist it off inside pump. If it snaps then you will have no choice but to get a full teardown and rebuild ($220ish).

you want to block it in place fully raised. unplug the two motor wirse and feed back out of cowling as needed. drive out lower retaining pin. You may have an anode in the way. Once the retainer is out take out the 9/16 mounting shaft. swing unit forward and you should see the upper retaining pin. Punch it out and remove that shaft. Unit should now come off boat.

If motor is turning (making whirring noises) then the problem is hydraulic.
