This is really only going to apply to those of you who have raw water circulation. This past weekend I winterized my boat, and I just want to pass on a few tips from some issues that surfaced during my process. When I was removing all the blue plastic drain plugs, I noticed that a good amount of water exited the manifolds, but when removing the ones in the engine block, I observed the same flow amount of water exit, but then started quickly slowing down, then stop. I do have quite a bit of GM V6/V8 experience, and I was thinking to myself "I think I should have seen much more water exit the block drains. Good thing I questioned myself, I took a small screwdriver and probed the block drains, and some thick rusty sedimant debris was blocking the drain (on BOTH sides of the block). So after a few min. of poking, I got all the water and debris out. Then the second issue was when I went to re-install the plastic plugs, one of the manifold plugs snapped off while I was trying to tighten it. Ahhhh friggin' dammit!!!!! The threaded portion was still in the manifold. I ended up using a 3/16" allen key, with the tip heated up hot with propane, and melted the broken portion of the plug, and removed it. My local marine parts store had those plugs, and commented they snap all the time.... So happy winterizing!

Can you not use brass plugs instead of the plastic ones?

The plastic blue Mercruiser drain plugs, I believe are a straight pipe thread, with an o-ringed flange to seal against the surface. I am pretty sure you can't use a brass NPT plug (at least not that I am aware of) maybe someone here knows of a brass replacement..

Mine are regular NPT threads. I use HEX HEAD brass plugs from Home Depot. (Lowe's did not carry them, only the square head)

That way I can use a socket wrench. I use Permatex soft set gasket compound. The socket is just for reach convenience. Do not use the full force of a socket wrench, you could crack the casting or strip the threads off the brass fitting.

Yep, I always poke up inside the engine block drains with a piece of wire, especially with these old boats. Almost always see a little crud come out. Flushing it regularly with Salt Terminator seems to help rinse all that stuff out too. Fortunately I'm in So. Cal. so I don't have to worry much about freezing, just our lousy economy and the imbeculs up in Sacramento!
