a Joe Reeves technical question

Joe, I made the mistake of buying the computer disk version of my repair manual and many things are unclear. On a 1975 Johnson 85hp to perform the pickup timing throttle cam follower adjustment the disk says to line the embossed line with the cam follower at 4 degrees I understand all of this but there are three embossed lines and the disk does not specify which one to use. There is a small one on top, a second one marked start, and a lower one? After reading so many of your posts I figured you were the man to ask.

Does anyone have an answer to this?

I am by no means Joe, but the bottom mark on the throttle cam should align with the center of the cam follower roller as the roller makes contact with the cam.

The START line on the throttle cam should center on the cam roller when the warm up lever on the control box is moved to the START position. If it does not, turn the stop screw in or out to obtain proper adjustment.

Here is a picture of my uncles 85hp, which is around the same year as yours. This motor hasn't been touched so you should be able to tell something by it. This is in the idle position, not warm up postion.
