We're running out of season up hear so I had the boat out for a burn today. The use we've had from it so far this year hasn't involved any extended WOT operation - just fishing and tubing. When I ran it solo today I found it falls down at WOT after a few seconds, then will come back on power. I'm running out of fuel.

When I did the rebuild last year, I installed a new BRP pump diaphragm and poppets kit in the original housing. I've not checked for air leaks this year, but the quick disconnects and fuel line are relatively new.

So, should I bite the 'bullet' and get a whole new pump, or take it apart and fiddle with it? Or?

I'm pulling the motor off the boat soon, and it'll sit out 'hard water' season in my heated garage.

Take it apart, see if there is something you missed, if you don't see anything, you have not lost anything. Maybe you'll find the problem, if not just get the new pump.

just running the tank a little low, maybe, combined with some bouncing in the chop -- tank pickup sucking air until the fuel sloshes back within reach.

Can't tuck it away until you run it some more with a fresh fill-up (or maybe try a WOT run with your trolling motor tank).

Tank was 3/4 full and the lake was pretty smooth. Fuel fresh, a couple of weeks old max. But I do have two tanks (the other is full of equally fresh fuel) and will try it before writing the pump off.

Edit: didn't think to push the primer in while it was falling on its face. Will try that too.

You're sure it's fuel related? Perhaps, after not having ran wide open for a long time, some crap fouled a plug momentarily at high speed?

Also crack the lid to makes sure the tank is venting properly.

All good ideas I'll try when the temperatures rise above 10C - maybe next week.

Yeah, I could provoke the problem multiple times. Dropped the hammer and run WOT for a few seconds then it would starve out, then after a couple more seconds without moving the hammer it would pick up again. Cycle would repeat if the hammer stayed down. I'm sure the float levels are right (not my first rodeo), but since the carbs have to come off to paint the block I'll open them up and check.

When your trouble shooting why not just do the vacuum and clear line air bubble tests. Rule out bad tank venting cap and such...
