Hey guys,
The low down:
Blew up an upper gearcase on a 1970 120HP omc stringer. Didnt want to pay millions to replace. Found a '63 drive and V4 for only 100 bucks. Might as well try it, I know it might be geared different and might not work.. but it bolts right up. dropped it in the water and she goes forward and backwards no problem. Just that WOT is way over RPM.. like it climbs out of the water at 3500 RPM+. according to the manual WOT should be 4000-4400. SHe would probably pull up to 5000 or more if I let her.
The details:
I have a 10x9.25 pin drive prop on it right now. I have found that I can get a 10x12 prop for it at least. if i am at say 5200 rpm WOT and I need to get down to say 3800, at 200 RPM an inch (I read that somewhere) I should need 7 inches of pitch. say a 10x16 or 10x17.
The question:
Can I get a prop with a crazier pitch like say a 10x20? And would this help prevent the over-revving?
I know I should get the right leg for her... but i just wanna go fishing and will sink her and scuba dive her instead if she is gonna cost me too much.
