1st off thank you for all the previous info. What i would like to know is about a prop and am having trouble navigating this website so i apologize if i ended up in the wrong catagory. I may need to replace my prop due to a spun hub on a merc 115 blue band my # is 48 77344 a40 17p a guy has a prop off a i/o mercruiser his # is 48 788120 a40 19p will this work ? I also was told how 2 check & see if my hub was spun by marking the prop & hub, launch my boat, run it & pull it out & see if the marks are off I do not disagree with that ,but another guy (not from this site but an experienced driveway marine mechanic ) says no need to launch boat just c-clamp the prop in a way to impede it"s ability to rotate , start the boat and just slip it into gear and if it keeps running my hub is spun i was cocerned about additional damage but he says it will stall the engine & that it's just slip it into gear and no more . This sounds alittle hinky to me,but once again i am back to see what y'all think. It usually would not be that big a deal to launch my boat, but ( not going for a sob story here ) i watch my three grand daughters during the day and my 4 year old has lukemia and has been in and out of the hospital the last couple of weeks and has been throwing up and running a fever so if i'm needed i don't want to be out testing my boat hence the thought of testing it at home has it's appeal. Once again i apologize for being long winded but would like to try & have my boat ready this weekend as i have a 15 year old at home that is chomping at the bit to take the boat out fishing & i told him he could start learning how to operate the boat already started him on launching & loading the boat Thank you for your input AND your patience

No the I/O prop won't fit. You are right. That guy is hinky. Good way to damage your engine or get hurt. Go with the first suggestion. (no need to apologize)

Re: a little more help for the newbie

You definitely do not want to "clamp" the prop and then put the engine in gear unless you want to spend money on broken lower unit parts. That is simply not a good idea. Next, you have no performance data to go on so at this point you don't even know if the 17P prop you had was correct for the boat. Yes -- it may have fit, but the pitch may not have been correct for the boat. This is not a one size fits all situation. If the 17P prop you have (when it was working ok) allowed the engine to run at or very near the upper end of the engine manufacturers recommended wide open throttle rpm, then it was the right prop. If it could not reach that rpm, then you have too much pitch. If it went over that rpm then you had too little pitch. The net result here is that the 19P may fit the engine, but it may not be right for the application.
