Here is a little teaser to exercise the mind.
Jill and John race from point x to y and back.
Jill goes 20 mph from x to y and back to x.
John goes 30 mph from x to y and 10 mph from y back to x.
Who arrives at point x first, Jill or John? :D :D

Jill

Say distance x-y is 60 miles, Jill covers each direction in 3 hours, for a round trip time of 6 hours. Jack takes only 2 hours for the first direction, but takes 6 hours for the return trip, for a total of 8 hours.

Looks like the average would be the same, 20 mph, but Jill did it first.

Re: A little teaser

Its a bit simpler to look at from a different perspective, dont add the numbers

john travels 3 miles for every 2 of Jills on the way out

coming back, Jill travels 2 miles for every 1 of johns

Jill wins, every time

Re: A little teaser

John's trip back at 10mph will always take as long as jill's entire round trip at 20mph, so when you add john's trip out he always loses.
