I have just finished reading the "Da Vinci code" by Dan Brown, i personally consider its content to be a load of hogwash, nevertheless entertaning it was.
The film version which i have not yet seen, has invoked controversial noises in various parts of the world, there are huge protests by Christians and Muslims for the film to be banned.
Has anyone read the book or seen the film? and what are your views on this subject?

An umbrella organisation of Islamic clerics in Mumbai have labelled the film as "blasphemous" because it spreads "lies" about Jesus Christ.

One Roman Catholic activist has gone on what he says is a "hunger strike until death" unless the film is banned.

Read it, really enjoyed it which is my goal with any book, music, movie, play etc. etc. I want to be entertained. Actually I find the concepts in the book quite plausible although that doesn't make them true.

Anybody else think it was just a quick rewrite of Angels and Demons? I read them in reverse order (Da Vinci 1st), but after two pages of A and D I was saying, wait a minute, some babe's patriarch is dead and in a gruesome fashion and we are calling Langdon to come help out? Let's just change the city, run around and try and finger it out, and go from there . . . Pretty lazy if you ask me, not to mention the absurdity of jumping out of a Helicopter holding a tarp and surviving . . .

Fiction is fiction, myth is myth. Some folks even believe that The Bible is mostly fiction and myth.

I haven't read it (DaVinci), probably won't. I heard it is good fiction.

No idea what the uproar is about.

Yes its fiction.......The whole thing is about ......well I wont ruin it for those of you who want to see it or read it but its fiction....Thing that makes it controversial is that it basicly says Christ was not divine.......moat of you who know me here, know that Im Christian and although I find the whole idea behind this fictional story wrong I have not based my life on something some dude from new hampshire could blow out of the water with some book he wrote.......Christians should feel a little more secure in what we profess to be the truth. Anybody who is this easily lead away from what I feel is the truth would probably not buy into the Christian belief system anyways.......There are plenty of books and beliefs out there that go against the Bible already.....why this one would cause a priest or Cleric threatin suiside (thats what a hunger strike is) is beyond me...

Hmmmm, I didn't see the assertion that Christ had offspring as negating his divinity, divinitness, divineness, I'm stickin' with divinity. Is that automatic? I don't know . . .

Just a warning!
Mrs.Link was given the "Da Vinci code" on CD at Christmas last year by her sister. She enjoyed it and said it was hard to put down. But, and there is always a BUT ;)
She said it was a lot like listening to "Paul Harvey" She wanted to scream Alright Already, you made your point! Now move on with the story line! :D

For me, as much as I like to hear Paul Harvey's "the rest of the story" for 3 minutes everyday, I'll pass on the book/cd and watch the movie!

btw she enjoyed it enough that she gave it back to her sister last week on her birthday.

As far as all to hopla? I'm more upset that I haven't met Spinners "lil" buddies yet! :D

Re: A man in the moon or little green men from Mars, conspiracy theorists abound

What's curious to me is, why the book took so long to cause the uproar. I read the book before I retired in January of 05'. My son got it and said it was pretty good. I read it and enjoyed it. Now all of a sudden...the books is raising havoc with the "believers". It's just a book....fiction at that. A well put together plot using some fact but more "inuendo" (I think that's the word I'm looking for) than anything. But...who's to say what's for sure and what isn't?

It's just my guess but....I don't think all this uproar came about until there was rumors of a movie being made about the book. Then someone who read the book thought...."I see some money here"......."KNOW WHUT UH MEAN VERN?"..... :D

Have to agree with many here. Read it about a year ago and thought it was a good read. If you're a fan of factually influenced fiction you will enjoy the book. Dan Brown did a great job taking some hypothesis' and weaving a tale around them. As to the fervor, my gut tells me most involved in the uproar didn't read the book. I took a very different message from the ending than anything that I hear in the media. But, I have no religious convictions so I may be unfairly open to the ideas presented as well as ignorant to the beliefs it is challenging.

That being said, if you haven't read it and plan on I highly recomend the illustrated version as it helps to visulaize some of the lesser know pieces mentioned in the novel.

Thanks Dale. "Hypothesis" fits better than "inuendo"..... :)

Re: A man in the moon or little green men from Mars, conspiracy theorists abound

Personally I could care less, my wife read the book and thought it was pretty good. I understand why there is an uproar, it takes some rather cheezy shots at the catholic faith, but that has become the national pastime, the problem is it won't stop its publication and probably only further stimulate its popularity.

And trying to convince anyone one way or the other is just a waste. I have no desire to see or read it, it's just a piece of fiction. It will blow over just like the last tempatation of christ or the passion. People who want to see it should, and those who think it is offensive shouldn't see it. I don't see this changing a non-believer into a believer or vice versa. It's just a story.

I wonder what would have happened if the story was about Muhammand vs. Jesus.
