The couple that docks their boat beside mine had a bad experience about two weeks ago. Throughout the summer they had numerous friends visit them on their boat which is a runabout. During one of thier parties, a few of their buds got a bad attitude and started yelling and cussing. Of course it caught my attention real fast. So I called on the VHF for the parks ranger. They showed up and escorted them out of the park.

Now that Labor day has gone, there are no gate guards, so people can come an go as they please. I personnally don't like it since it increases riff raff traffic that has no business in the park.

Apparently the idiots came back sometime through the week and sabotaged their boat. They didn't vandalize it, but what they did was uncalled for.

This is what they done. The boat had a lever handle style plug. They tied a small piece of rope around the handle of the plug and then to the out drive. So when my neighbor took his wife and kids to the boaters beach the outdrive has to be raised to in order to beach the boat. Well, with the rope tied to the plug and the outdrive you can get the idea of what happened. It pulled the plug out.

He didn't know he had just pulled out the plug by raising the outdrive after he had beached it. They unloaded their picnic goodies and played on the beach. Not paying attention to their boat, it just took on water until the whole back end was submerged. Yep, water in the oil, over the starter, alternator, and into the gimbal.

He had a small hand held VHF and called for me on the radio. So I went to his rescue with my generator and sump pump. Lucky he wasn't sitting in too deep of water. We was able to pump the water out and get his craft to raise some, but it kept filling with water. So we felt around the hull trying to find out where a hole was. As he walked behind the boat he felt something wrap around his leg. It was the rope with the plug still on the end of it. Put the plug back in, pumped the water out and towed him back in.

What a shame, why can't some people just leave well enough alone. Since nobody seen it happen, there is no proof who done it. But its odd that those two idiots are no where to be found!

Hopefully your bud has insurance to cover the costs.
I know that everything will come in time to people like that, but hopefully this time they will get theirs sooner than later.

He has already got it back together and plans to launch this weekend. It cost him less than what the deductable was since he did it himself. He dried the alt/starter in an oven at a low temp for a couple of days. Changed the oil/filter, universal joints/gimbal bearing. He was just going to blow it out, but told him new ones didn't cost that much so he put a new one in.

I never liked that style plug. Was always afraid that debri of some kind would flip it open. On my boat its a half inch pipe plug! Thats a bit harder to just fall out. :D

I have 2 plugs....one with the flip style and one with a screw in type.
I prefer the screw in type definetely.

Screw in type for mine too. Have a palm ratchet, and socket to snug and remove. Gives a great deal of comfort on the water. Especially with moronic capers like that
