Recently I brought my boat in to a local shop to get the idle adjusted. They did not have a test tank. They used a hose with muff - - and the mechanic had a round piece of plywood a tad bigger than the gearcase with a hole the size of the prop shaft that he secured to the shaft with a prop nut. This creates back pressure and simulates being in the water. He used this to check the carb adjustments and set-up.

Seemed to make sense to me but I have never seen or heard of this before and was wondering if this was "good practice."

The service manual for Johmson/Evinrude specs are for, engine at operating temp, in gear in water, boat moving.

SoLittle,

The plywood is a neat trick. It does simulate back pressure and sure does cut down on the noise. I bought a flush muffler that does the same thing.

However, you cannot fake; the running in gear load on the prop unless you have a dyno.
