So, yesterday, I went to a Napa parts house to pick up a socket, because I was doing some work on my girlfriend's car. As I was pulling out of the parking lot, low and behold, I seen an outboard motor sitting at this little second hand shop acrossed the way. I pulled up, parked my car and got out. First thing I did was go and see what this little drink mixer was. I was thinkin....COOL....a margarita mixer!! A 1hp Tanaka Outboard. So far, this is the smallest outboard I ever had in my posession. The only other outboards I had that were close, was a Neptune and an Evinrude Ranger. The old Evinrude Ranger was a 1939 1.1hp Very close in horsepower, but maybe a little heavier. This tiny little Tanaka, I could hold it in one hand and dig out my keys with the other hand. LOL Nice lookin' little motor though.

Ahhhh mine actually runs, but it looks like I need pawl springs for it. No biggie. It took me a while to get it started, but I think that's because it sat for a long time and things just plugged up on the fuel feed. Once I got gas in it, it started up.

If yours runs nice, then why do you want to use it for a boat anchor? I thought a nice running motor is what we all want here. :D:D

I took mine for a spin on our 14' jon while the water was moving a really good clip down the Legendary Ohio river, When I hit the drift currant just out side the Marina the 3hp Tanaka absolutly could not keep the boat under control, I manuvered as best I could to the mouth of the creek just a few feet south of the mouth of the marina and screamed it toward a landing.
I regularly run the Eskas under the same conditions and have never ran accross one well tuned that could not handle fast water.
The Tanaka is a cool looking little motor and if you live on a small creek or use it in a pond/lake I guess it would Ok??? but don't bet your life on one...no no...bad move.....

Edit:
I think my biggest dislike and reasonable fear was the dual clutch setup, when you come out of the throttle you lose all power and forward movement unlike a direst drive where you always keep some momentum even under low throttle.

Yea, I've owned a few Eskas myself. I never ran one on the water, but all the ones I picked up through the years were decent runners and the ones that didn't run, were easily coaxed back to life. Myself, I would put a 6hp Johny/Rude on that 14' Jon boat. That boat is probably rated for a 9.5 That little putt putt of mine, I think is too small to push anything bigger than an inner tube, but I bought it because I thought it was cute. Hells bells, the powerhead is almost as small as my fist. :D:D:D

I fish the creeks up in stumpsville so the Eskas get me up and in there with very little damage ever and I almost trust them for long hauls up river to other creeks, knock on wood....Have you ever been crusing along and run the ole flat bottom up on a stump you couldn't get off of?

3hp?? wow, that's a monster compared to mine. LOL I think the old Evinrude 1/2 hp Mate, might be the only thing smaller.

Ouch, sounds like a wild experience. I once had a little 5hp jet pump that I saved for those kind of places, but never used it. It had the Eska/Clinton type powerhead on it too.

We have many big bass tournaments around here sometimes 3 or more per weekend in the summer, I like to hobnob with alot of the big boys and I maintain the rights of passage and use for us little fish, even when theres 20 225 hp gamblers up the creeks LOL, I get a big hoot out of watching a 40,000+ bass boat end up in the stumps as he's chatting it up on his celly running half throttle nose high and not watching his depth finder and he veres to miss me whilest I hog the channel....its a sight to behold when they slam into a group of 6 stumps or more...its amazing how well those big bass boats handle that kind of thing....

Yea, myself, I prefere to run the older and lesser expensive equipment. I totally see where you're coming from on these guys with the expensive stuff, who don't have the brains to run it right. :D:D

My father had a 3.5hp briggs thru hull prop shaft in a 14' aluminum V, with a friggin' rudder behind the prop. He put me and my brother in it when we got old enough to bullyrag him about not taking us fishing. It was an upgrade from his 8' spruce pirogue. We'd see those 150 hp guys stud hossin' around in the bayous rolling wakes you could surf on. I remember asking him if they intended to run the fish down. He said maybe, but he also thought they used 30 lb test line, so when they got hung up, they could just tie the line to a cleat, and drag the stump out.

Oh cool, just like having a miniature inboard.

My 1938 Clarke Troller 1.2 hp looks like it could have been a drink mixer for real! Funny looking creature if you've never seen one. Probably around the same physical size as your Tanaka. Anyway, congrats on the cool find Capt. Zehpyr!

Oh yea. It'll be fun to play with. I might hunt down a little wash tub to mount it on. LOL :D:D I probably won't do much with it right now. I'm in the midst of removing and replacing a 460 Ford motor these days. I only get fridays off, so I pick away at it a little at a time. I should have it done by the end of the month.

Those clarke trollers are pretty cool engines. I wonder why they designed a motor to go under water. LOL They are a cool addition to anyones collection though. They're pretty rare nowadays. An old Waterman would be a cool find too.

It was a miniature inboard. I've never seen anything like it since.

Re: A new drink mixer :D:D

I heard of someone doing that years ago. It should be relatively easy to do.
