A not so flawless install Alpha one. Help!

I blew up my outdrive and bought a used one. I bought a new impeller kit for it and it seems that it is an "R" type instead of my old one is an "MR" type. It is an older unit than what I had. I hired a guy to help me that says he is a boat mechanic (out of work because of the economy) has all the tools and such. Anyways, the problem is every time the unit is put on you either get forward and neutral or reverse and neutral. He has put it on 25 or 30 times so far and it still won?t shift right. I have been helping him and watched and even lined up the shifter myself 5 or 6 times. The problem is ... what I will call the "boot and the foot" if you turn the boot and foot all the way right (clockwise) it goes in reverse, center is neutral, and left is drive. The shifter from the boat when hooked up and the lower unit isn't attached so you can see it, shifts the opposite direction. We laid it side by side with the old one and it moves the same as the other one. Is this "R" type different somehow and won?t work or is there something we are not doing right? And yes it is a standard spin unit. Not left handed. We have a whole day into trying to get this thing mounted and ready to go but for some reason the boat GODS say no. Any input would be of great help.

Here is a picture that shows how the shifter should aim for each gear.
Your problem may be an old cable with too much slop, along with more slop in the shift spool in the drive. Then you can only adjust to get either forward or reverse. but not both.

According to the mechanic the cable is fine. (Not my opinion, his.) And from your picture, it is hard to tell but are the "toes of the foot" on the shift shaft pointing to the back? Mine are pointing to the front and if you spin it 180 the there is not enough for it to grab onto and it just comes out.

Toe is forward, not aft.

Well, my mechanic got frustrated and went home after 6 hours of trying to stab this thing. I didn't give up.( It is after all, my boat.) I split the case one more time just to make sure every thing was the way it was supposed to be and gave it one more try by myself. The bastage went right on the very first try and works like a dream. Shift?s really smooth and I have forward and reverse. Go figure. I don?t know what I did but thank the boat GODS for that. Maybe I can get it in the water next weekend for a trial run and hope it stays together.:)
