Tried to re-install my perfectly good shift cable last night with a new bellows on it. Being alone, my plan was to push it in through the transom hole in my Bravo 3 and then route it properly from inside the engine compartment. Big mistake. It somehow jammed into the flywheel/coupler area and no amount of coaxing could get it out undamaged. After an hour of trying, I finally had to turn the engine over by hand and then tug the cable out it with Vice grips to get the darn thing unstuck. Gotta get a new cable now. Next time I'll get help.

UH, I think that was the proper way, except for the part where the end finds it's way into the flywheel.

Yep, if you aren't careful, they will get in next to the coupler. Things go bad from there.

I think at ten grand, you get to chose your own rank. If I ever get there, I'm thinking of Old Fart cuz by then I'll be one. ;)

A trick is to remove the core, insert a core from a control box cable(available as junk from most marinas),pull the shift cable casing off leaving the core, the control cable core acts as a guide when pushing the core back on, remove control cable core, insert shift cable core and reassemble.

I thought the trick was to tape a piece of wire to the old cable, then pull it out and the wire in. Then use the wire to pull the new cable back in.

The "Core wire" from the old shift cable can also be used, Just pull it out of the old cable from the drive side, and push it into the cable from the opposite direction.
Then just push the new cable onto the core wire and push the new outer cable into position.
