A question about oil

Greetings :)

My '88 4Runner has 250,000 miles on it. I use Quaker State High Mileage oil with the expensive Fram super extra yada yada filter. The engine has always been serviced with oil changes at 3 to 5k intervals.

With all this talk about Synth oil, I was curious about switching over to a synth for my 4Runner since it has such high mileage. Someone posted that switching high mile engine to synth oil could cause damage because of the detergents breaking loose sludge. I think the inside of my engine is pretty clean since it has always had either Castrol 10-40 or Quakerstate High Mileage 10-40 in it.

Any thoughts on this? Would it be worth my while to switch over? Would the change interval go to 6 or 7K miles? Maybe I should just stay with what I'm using because the engine runs fine, no smoke, etc. I just want to make sure that it keeps as long as possible, say 500,000 miles or maybe 1,000,000 :D

Re: A question about oil

I agree with Mellow Yellow, Soulwinner. Years ago Quaker State was famous for building up a wax layer inside the engine, and preventing small leaks. Dad new a man with an old Pontiac, that had 300,000 miles on it, with Quaker State, doing fine.

The wax base seems not to do quite as well in some newer style smaller engines, because of some pluggage problems, in the smaller ports, (only from what I hear, but they have made some changes).
No facts to back this up, though, but considering that Quaker State used to be famous for building up a thin paraphin base (wax liner) and Synth, has been reported to break loose sludge, Id stay with the program your already with, which appears to be working for you.

Myself, I believe in regular changing, of a good Oil, and filter.

Just my opinion ;)

SW, save the synthetic for your next 4Runner! You might want to add one of these too.

http://www.autoenginelube.com/pages/903473/index.htm

A combination of the two, 2 million miles?

Those 4 runners are amazing. I have a friend that has 265K on his 84 or 86 stick shift 4 banger. Hard to imagine the newer ones trying to equal that.

1993 toy pickup
22RE engine
10-40 exxon changed when i remember, usually between 5-7.5k. with duralube added every 50k or so. before duralube i used ??(i forgot the name)
also filled this engine with water once(trout stream)
now- 277k

i probably would not changeover now SW. too late in the game i think. i did do that once on a bug engine. it leaked. i fixed it, but thats what seems to happen when waiting so long. i had been running castrol 20-50.

(amended) i will mention on the quakerstate. my pop always used it. he's been an ind maint mech/cert electrician forever. i saw some heads with qs gunk on'em. he never had that prob, even rebuilt our family veh engines. must have been in the routine maint scheduling... but he did most of the rebuilding late70/early80's.

Re: A question about oil

Thanks for the replies. There is an old saying down here in the South: "A Quaker State motor never needs a rebuild." In the old days QS was famous for depositing a layer a waxy sludge in the engine that it nice and tight. Don't know if it still does. I'll go with Mellow on this and won't fix what ain't broke ;)

With that many miles on your 4Runner, I would stick with what was working.

Just my .02.
