A question about stringers

I am just curious about this. Typically how do stringers run under the sole of the boat? Do they run the length of the boat or do they run across it? I am sure I will find out soon enough but curiosity got the best of me.

Re: A question about stringers

Usually both. There is normally some sort of grid running both front to back and side to side. Stringers, also called timbers, usually make the backbone while bulkheads run out to the sides to a second set of longitudinal stiffeners that run parallel to the stringers. (not sure what they are called) And finally "wings" run sideways tapering into the hull line to the sides. However each manufacturer has its own methods so you could have anything.
