I recall a super-film-strength oil treatment from several years ago . . . .I wonder if anyone has heard of it or what it was called, or if it’s still around??? I remember seeing a salesman set up a demonstration of it. he had an electric-motor powered device set up, with the motor powering a shaft onto which was attached a sort of egg-shaped ball if memory serves me correctly. on top of the ball or knob was resting a steel plate with a way to attach weights to it. Now this ball or knob was partially sitting in a cup into which different lubricants and oils could be placed. The salesman would put in motor oil and other stuff including STP and Teflon treatments into the cup and start adding weights until the motor drug on down and stopped. A person could then see the relative film strength and friction-stopping power of various lubricants. But towards the end of the demo, he would mix a little of his oil treatment he was selling in with some plain motor oil, and he would start piling on the weight, more and more weight, all of the weights he had and people could push on it and still could not obtain enough friction to stop the motor. Many times the weight required to stop the best of the other lubricants! the thing would get so hot it would smoke and catch on fire, but the film strength of the lube refused to break. no metal to metal contact. Anybody know what I’m talking about here? Thanks a lot

I made a comment on another post on the benefits of decarbing which I am pasting part of here.

I don't want to start a firestorm of debate, and my experience with this issue is admittedly limited. That said, as with many things there is a kernel of truth and a lot of additional faith tacked on to it. This is often the source of much of our commerce. These products undoubtedly have some utility, and have some beneficial effect, particularly if your compression is down due to a stuck (from carbon and other deposits) ring or if you idle a lot and have a lot of carbon buildup. I used a can of the stuff recently myself "for general principles".

But I am continually amazed at the "benefits" people assign to automotive and marine "maintenance" products (Look at the amazing results you can get on the back of the bottles). As Dennis Miller says "I don't want to get off on a rant here" but I used to work in the marketing of pharmaceuticals and I have watched as some of the products we marketed as essential, and drug of choice, are no longer used, because the patent wore off (read less $$). The best pill we ever made far and away was the Placebo (sugar pill).

Rest assured if miracle lubricants were actually available, automotive, marine, aircraft, aerospace, military, industrial, and even aliens would be al over the stuff like white on rice. There are very few secrets out there and if somebody tells you that their secret will allow you to get something for nothing and the government/doctors/scientists/epa is preventing you from hearing about it the hair on the back of your neck should stand up and you should run not walk away from whoever is spouting that nonsense. That's just my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

i went to a SLICK 50 demo onetime.. a recuitment..

the demonstrator pull started a small briggs & stratton engine... let it run & run .. after a long time ,,we single filed up an touched the head ,,while runnin'.. it was very warm ( average or lower) but not hot enuff to repel the hand..

afterwards,,, he shut it off,,, removed the oil drain plug.. NO OIL CAME OUT... the motor was without oil...!!!

i even went up ,,, much to his surprize,, an stuck my pocket knife in the drain hole to see if it was a hole an not inturnally sealed ( trick )..

i was very impressed..!!

John, there are alot of fakes out there...and there are 'super' lubricants too....but the better question is, do they belong in the crankcase of an internal combustion engine? Many of these super lubes are chlorine based, and under the right conditions can become VERY reactive..to the point of eating the bearings you were trying to save....

If you remember the Dura-lube info-mercial they used a Chrysler slant 6 engine and for a good reason, it was one of the few car engines with solid lifters, so it could run without oil pressure which would be needed to make hydraulic lifters work, these magic beanstock seeds go back for decades, one 1960's deal guaranteed this device would let you drive your car for a month on one tank of gas, what they sent for $30 was a handful of $.15 subway tokens. Another guaranteed a 25% increase in gas mileage, what they did during the tests was drive in the USA and then with the magic device installed drive in Canada where the imperial gallon is 5 quarts of gas, sure enough a 25% increase is miles per gallon, P.T Barnum said it best,,,,,,,,,,,, :p

John Reynolds, There is a guy goes by the name of oilman that frequents the outboard motor board. Try going there and paging him, he knows his stuff when it comes to oils and lubricants.

Hey john, When I was working in a garage station, we had a visit from the Bardahl Oil man and he had a machine just like you described. We could put any lube that we had from wins friction proofing to Mobile #1 oil in the sample cup and he would run the machine and while it was seizing and slowing down fast, he would add
just a couple of drops of the Bardahl and the tool would pick up speed and one couldn't stop it then. I got the impression that Bardahl had an extreme pressure lubricant which resembled soap of some kind... anyway, it seemed to work.... Jim Reed
