A tach problem that I caused.

I put the dwell meter on wrong. Positive to positive & then the black meter wire to ground. I don't know how it happened, I wasn't even drinking. Now the tach just sits at 1000 rpm when the engine is idling or running & goes back to zero when the ignition is switched off. Do I need a new tach?

Screwed up agin eh Bin Laden, I mean lurkin. No seriously I dont quite understand what you did. You're supposed to hook up power to power then ground to ground and then the dwell wire to the - post on the coil.
So I guess you connected the dwell wire to ground, and now the tach on the dwell meter reads badly? I can't see how that would affect the boat tach.

Or you connected the dwell meter ground to the - post on the coil and the dwell wire to ground? That what ya did? I dont know the mechanism of failure if that caused the boat tach to fail. Try disconnecting the tach entirely, then reconnecting, then making absolutely SURE the tach has a good ground and good power. Then make sure the gray tach wire is connected to the coil good. Make sure, dont just look at it.
Fool around with the adjustments in the back of the tach if it has any. If all this fails, buy a tach.

Hmmm. You know me very well already. I was afraid of the connotation of the Bin Lurkin name but I'd been lurkin around this board for a long time & just couldn't resist the name. I'm not quite sure what happened either as I've been using the tach/dwell meter since 1965, but hot lately. Yep, I hooked up to the red coil post & then grounded the other wire to the block. No brain here sometimes. I will do what you suggest & see what happens. Regards, Bin Lurkin.
