Somehow I thought I already had the engine oil and drive fluid . Well I don't have enough and Have already drained the engine and drive. Will it hurt anything to let the boat sit without oil and fluid for a week or 2. It will not be down to freezing here. I can pick the oil this week but the drive fluid will be next week. I had no water in wither when I drained them.

Put the drain and fill plugs back in to help keep air out.Hopefully the gears have enough coating of the old oil to keep rust from starting.
I think it will be ok but others may have more info.
The engine oil i would get in asap.

there should be no rust forming in a week or 2. Just make sure they don't get wet from rain.

Re: A week or so with no oil?

Someone correct me if I am wrong but the oil sits in the oil pan when the boat is not running.

Anyways.. I would get the engine oil and gear oil ASAP as it can be expensive to take chances with such things.

I will have the engine oil in there by Wednesday (Wal Mart has it along with the filter) and I pass it every day.. But I have to go about 20 miles one way to get the drive fluid and it is going to be a bad week at work...............

High Performance Gear lube. For the Alpha 1. All my WM carries is the stuff for outboards.

Cant you order it online somewhere. Shipping can't cost more than the price of gas to drive 40 miles (probably $6-8). Plus the investment of your time. I'll check west marine online although there prices are always on the high side.

They have pennzoil 100% synthetic for $13.99/quart. Not the same stuff that they sell in the stores but thats what I found in my 2 min search.

Strauss had real merc oil cheaper. The good stuff, and engine oil and filters.

The outdrive oil is outdrive oil for outboards as well as in boards. Same stuff.

Re: A week or so with no oil?

I totally forgot about the Boater's World that opened about 5 miles from me about 6 months ago. I do not usually go there because of the prices. I was planning on going to Gander Mountain this weekend for the gear lube. But, I picked up the HP Gear Lube today on the way to work and got the Oil & Filter on the way home from work at WM. If things go as planned I will have all fluids replaced on Wednesday.

Just for reference:
Boater's World - Merc. 25W40 - $5.99 / qt
Merc. Oil Filter - ~$11.00

Walmart - Merc. 25W40 - 4.59 / qt
Merc Oil Filter - ~$7.00

Water Sep. Fuel Filter is the same price as the Oil Filter at WM. Starbrite Instant Hull Cleaner was about $9.00 at WM. Boaters World wanted $18????????

I have 3+ years left on a 5yr engine/drive warranty. I am not about to cause myself grief over some drive fluid that is a little more difficult to acquire.

Boaters world and West marine are the biggest ripoff artists out there. Maybe that is why Boaters world here in Austin just closed their doors and one of the 2 West Marine locations is shutting down in December...people are figuring out they are trying to gouge us.

I tried to get my wife a job their a couple years ago.
The employee discount is 40%.
A friend of mine who works on boats also gets 40% discount.

Any Marine rated product is a rip off. It is the same thing as a non-marine rated product, except it is twice the price. MOST of the stuff at boaters world or west marine is not something you can get at wal-mart, because it is not marine rated at wal mart.

You just have to pay more for most stuff involving boats

Re: A week or so with no oil?

yea, like $30 - 40 a quart for cheap topside fiberglass paint!
$90 per qt for good bottom paint!

Those marine places really jack up the prices, but you really have no option
