I'm a newby that's been lurking the background reading and learning from all the questions and answers that have submitted by others. I purchased a 1977 Siverline with a 140 mercruiser. I was told by the seller that this boat was a two owner, well kept and maintained boat that had been in storage for the past seven years and was being sold due to them never using it.
Well it was well kept but the maintained part was superficial from what was found during the short time I've owned her. I expected to find the usual problems due to being stored for this long of a period but the more I repaired the more I found needed to be repaired or had been repaired in the past. The biggest of the past repairs is the epoxied block repair that was well hidden but apparently done right as it worked.
Well to make this long story shorter I'll get to the point. I've done a top end as there was a stuck exhaust valve and a blown head gasket. And I replaced the impeller which was found to be completely destroyed.
I've never owned an inboard/outboard and I've never worked on one before. Without this site I would have had to have taken the boat to a mechanic which would have made this whole deal too expensive. I now have a 34 year old boat which runs and looks brand new. Thank's for all your help and advice and I want to let other newb's know that they can too do the work themselves. Just read the problems others have had, look at what they did to correct them and most of all, read the repair manual that goes with your boat. All can be found on this site and are free.
Oh, my wife and kids are happy which makes life much better.
Again, THANKS!
