Evening everyone, It finally happened, Top gears said bye bye .
I thought I remembered a few yrs back , they made Cryo-dipped gears?
Is it true, if so where would one get them?
Thank you !

Have not heard of Cryo stuff on gears, but normally the gears would last more then one life time if maintenance is done. A Alpha drive should not have massive power behind it.

Look forward to the comments of better gears but maybe just a new SEI upper will outlast most of us

Alldodge, I know , I have a 383 in it. I'm easy on the stick every time.
I looked at SEI stuff, will there upper bolt to Merc Lower? Seems it should.
Luckly I have a spare drive

My buddy has a 18 foot Checkmate, 383, drive extension and A1G1. He is easy on the stick and its a very old boat and drive is still original. I think what has saved it is its a really light boat

For a while there Merc did do a 'heavy duty' top gear set.

Yes, the SEI top will bolt up to a Merc lower...

Ok Gents, I talked with local marine wrench here that I trust, ( know him long time ), He quoted me this morning, with the Heavy Duty gears, full rebuild, And reseal of lower, I think it was about 2300 bucks
I know the HD gears are twice the price of Reg. gears
They charge 125$ per hour. He say 4-5 for upper, 3 or so for lower.
Not looking for agruments at all.
Does it sound fair ? I am a fair guy..
Thanks !
Edit. includes new WP, which I just installed a couple weeks ago , lol
I'll keep that

just a hard pill to swallow ,Boat is very nice for it's age, Solid boat.

If you go this route, those times (for labour) are about right.
