2002 90 h.p. Mercury Saltwater 2-stroke has been nothing but trouble since I got it in February. Problem 1: wouldn't start unless choked or in fast idle. Turns out it was a piece of metal from the manufacturing process that got into one of the low idle pick-ups (warranty DID cover this). Just today, while out in the water, noticed that the tell-tale was not spraying a steady stream as usual and was pretty weak. I flushed the motor, and noticed small pieces of black material, so can only assume it's the impellar. Hope it's no more than that. Has anyone else had quality issues with this model of engine? I'm beginning to wonder if all this is worth it!!

her mercurys small engine suck!and mercrysbig engines are great! the 90 is in between so you got both a sucky and a vantastic motor! some times it is sucky and some times it is good, sometimes you get a bad impellor, just replace it

I've been running Merc's for over 20 years. From 20 horse up to 150 horse and have had no more problems with them than Johnson's or Evinrude and I've run all sizes of the OMC line.

I've had problems that the dealer wouldn't cover under warranty, went straight to Merc about it and they contacted the dealer and it got taken care of. Merc is a good company and will stand behind their product.

Re: AAAARRGGH! Mercury lemon?

After owning both mercs, and omc’s (pre 90’s) I would have to say that mercs are built better, and hold up better in salt water. On the other hand they are a pain to work on…. Omc’s tend to be much easier to work on… so I guess like everything in life there is a tradeoff. I like them both, but I think my next motor will be a merc. Is it possible that you sucked up sand to the impeller, or ran it out of water?

It's a possibility, though I am very careful to keep it out of the sand, and have not scraped bottom as far as I know. It's never been run out of water -- this is my first "big" boat, so I'm very careful. I'm glad to hear you like the Merc's. Perhaps this go-around at the shop will take care of the problem. Thanks for your comments.

Hi bryanredfish,

Sorry to hear of your problems, I have a 2000 model 90hp Saltwater Merc and too date I am very happy with its performance, boat is only used in saltwater. I will pass on some observations
# the carbs seem to be quite sensitive, mine was a little erratic on idle and sometimes stalled, just richened the mixture by an extra 1/8 turn out on mixture screws made a huge difference. The dealer agreed and said settings made in test tank often require further tweaking.
# water flow and cooling seems excellent 5psi at idle, 9psi at 1500rpm and 15psi + at WOT on pressure gauge, can touch heads and any other part of motor after 20 mile run at 5000rpm
# motor outperforms original motor (90hp inline Merc six) on this boat with 38 mph at WOT (5300rpm), boat is fairly heavy (2600 to 3000lb)17ft deep V fibreglass half cabin used in offshore fishing.
# motor seems to need a few hours (50 +) before delivering peak performance, virtually immediate starting hot or cold with slight use of fast idle lever and choke
# only problem too date happened 2 days ago with alarm coming on 12 miles from home, shut down and lifted cowl, motor temp OK, oil level Ok and obviously no oil injection feed problem (oil level dropping & motor running perfectly) continued home at planing speed. Checked problem and found faulty oil level indicator sensor in oil tank, motor is recently out of warranty discussed with local dealer and new sensor to be fitted tomorrow at no cost.

best of luck with your dealer

Bob
