Buddy led me to a boat today. 14 foor sea nymph. it just appeared on the dock one day, he lobsters out of this whorff. No one knows who's it is, figure it blew in from a storm. Anyway, it sunk then someone drug it ashore and its been there for three weeks. Anyone run into this? Either how to legally take it or find out who owned it. Hasn't been registered in 6 years

Re: abandoned boat

Even that 6 year old registration should lead to a prior owner. It really is based on the local regulations and laws.

Re: abandoned boat

It might help if you say where you found it, at least what state. Laws vary from state to state. If it was adrift perhaps salvage law applies.

Re: abandoned boat

somebody owns it-check with the state where its registerd & see what they say.
at our marina people abandon boats from time to time-- they auction them off usually for very little.
Right now they have Vinny Paul's--ex drummer of Pantera,Damage Plan currently with Hell Yeah, older 34 ft SeaRay the " Hell Yeah"
It is trashed hard- Marina mechanics say it would cost $20K-$30K to get it useable.
it is priced a $4800.as it sets.
There is another cool old wooden trawler that has not run in 10+years that the older gentleman passed away.

Re: abandoned boat

abandoned boat laws are generally YEARS, not a couple weeks... Call a local law enforcement and turn the problem over to them.

Re: abandoned boat

generally the guy whose land it's on is the only one who could start the legal salvage process. However, in Virginia, there is law still on the books covering "strays and adrifts."

Usually the process to get a salvage title is very cumbersome, expensive and time consuming if done correctly; the laws are usually made for large boats and don't make practical sense for a rowboat. But it seems that fewer and fewer of our laws make practical sense any more.
