? About my new Tach

My wife picked up a TELEFLEX tach for my boat and after i installed it and set it up to 5 pole according to the instruction i took it out to see how it worked. <br /><br />It seems to be running higher than what the RPM's sound said that my idle was at 2000 and it was bearly turning over so i know i was not turning that much. Also at WOT said that i was turning 6400 RPM's <br /><br />moved it to 6 pole and said idle was 1000 and wot was 5400 rpm's <br /><br />My motor is a 74 evenrude 50 hp i thought it was a 5 pole motor but i could be wrong.<br /><br />Does these sound right for my motor. <br /><br />74 50 hp <br />16' fisher marine aluminume boat <br />250 lb for me lol <br />200 pounds of other stuff <br />13-1/4 X 17 old as dirt prop

Teleflex saysif it's a 2 cylinder 50HP it should be set to 5P. If it's a 3 cylinder...set it to 6P.

It's a 2 cyl<br /><br />Could there be something that is causeing the tach to read higher than normal. i know my idle is not 2000 rpms

Went to the web site for that tach and found nothing helpful at all. My manual reads get a tach but beyond that give no help in working on one <br /><br />Thanks

I don't know how many poles are in your stator but most OMC's have 12 so a tach setting of 6P is correct. The RPM that you say you get with it set at 6P seems about right. The 5P numbers don't seem to be correct.

Ok i thought the 6 poles RPM's sounded about right but the instructions with the tach said to set it to 5 pole. <br /><br />next ? is 5400 at WOT good for this boat
