my 79 120 mercruiser gage only reads,on the gage, when fully down or fully up? Is this right? or should there be a middle poisition which shows on the gage? Is there an adjustment for this? I have looked on the outdrive and seen what looks like an adjustment that says T.P. on both sides of the outdrive? What is this? I am stumped?

james

the trim sender and trim limit are a problem area on most oudrives

they are nice but not really needed when you get your manual and see what is involved in changeing them you can make the call

if you going to put on new bellows and such its would be the best time to replace them

tommays

It sounds like someone put both senders of the same kind on your boat. They should look like the picture below.

If it is only reading in the two extremes, that would indicate either a bad sender, or as Don said, someone put a switch where it should be a sender. In either case, to correct the problem and do it right, it is a bit of a project. As Tommay's indicated, it just makes more sense to do while you are changing bellows. In a nutshell the project involves changing the sender including the wiring from the sender all the way through the housing and to the engine wiring harness where it plugs in. Just in-case you may think of taking a short cut and slicing the wires....that's fine....if you want to do it again two months from now.
