The darn motor ran fine last weekend, started it with old gas in it. This weekend it will not start. Plugs getting good spark. Do not know if it is a carb problem. I sprayed some gas into the carbs but was not sure how far to spray it in. This did not heip. When I pump the primer bulb gas slowly leaks out of the bottom carb nothing out of the top carb. When I try to turn motor over I see no gas spraying into the carbs. By the way this is a 1990 50 hp merc. I am at my wits end Thinking of taking it to the shop. Does anyone have an idea how much a shop will charge to diagnose the problem.

Usually a shop will charge about 1 hr to diagnois a problem, at least that is what we charge. The price will vary from shop to shop. Using a good service manual will help you out alot.

A decent shop should diagnose your problem in just under an hour, and then tell you what they think it will cost to repair.

But don't bring the boat in with a tarp on it,tied down with 100' of rope. That ALONE can cost 15 minutes.

DHP

You can bet that if you had old gas sitting in there for any length of time, the carbs are gonna have to be taken apart and cleaned. This is evident by the fuel leaking out of the carb throat when you pump the bulb up. No fuel through the jets = no run....

Go to Engine FAQs, Makinnat. Diagnose it yourself.

I agree with Rick, you probably have gummed up carbs, but don't fix anything until you know what needs fixing.

I've done this before. The old petrol has to be cleaned out of everything. Fuel lines, fuel can, and the carb. You might even have to strip it down and clean it thoroughly.

I'd clean the can and lines out first then spray some fuel mixture into the carb and see if that helps. Otherwise it's carb cleaning time.
