My painful story in bullet points :)

1. My father gave me his 97 Pro Sports Bay boat with a 97 75HP Mariner 2 Stroke :)

BAD PART: He never maintenanced it.. for anything... and it still had the same fuel filter (external screw on type) that he had put on during Year 1!!!

Symptoms:
1. Would stall at idle randomely.
2. If you stopped for more than a few minutes you would have to pump bulb to get it started again.
3. Hard starting (cranking took a few seconds before firing).
4. Acceleration hesitated. After warm up... if you went full throttle it would hesitate and be sporadic until about 3200 rpm then kick in like nothing was wrong.

Since he never treated the gas (and only used it a few months of the year) and he hadn't used it since I was out with him last (a year ago) I was sure the gas was shot along with most of the fuel system.

WHAT I HAVE DONE SO FAR:
1. Got rid of old gas.
2. Replaced fuel hose.
3. Replace fuel filter.
4. Went through a can of Power Tune.
5. Changed gear lube (no flecks... everything looked good besides it was old).
6. Put new gas in (a tad rich with oil) and some QuickSilver "Quickleen" to keep working on the gunk that is probably in fuel system and carbs.
7. Greased up throttle assembly (it was not smooth... at all).
8. Changed the spark plugs.(one of them broke in half).

Took it out this weekend and it started the second I turned the key, idle is better, sounds better, no pumping bulb after sitting, engine seems to pee better, acceleration is a "little" better but still hesitates getting up to full speed/rpm. The only time it really got up to full speed correctly and smoothly was the first year we had it and before he got some bad gas (reason for fuel filter).

Can anyone point me to the next step into solving the acceleration problem. I have the repair manual and I think checking the "reed valves" is a next step but I am not sure. The engine ONLY has 147hrs on it... total ... after 8yrs.

No compression test yet (getting a tester this weekend). I am really enjoying fixing her up and already re-terminated and fixed up the entire electrical system. Low and behold the batteries stay charged now :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You guys ROOOOCCCKKK. I will probably run another can of Power Tune or Seafoam through the system to make sure I get as much carbon and crud out of there.

How hard is it to rebuild the fuel pump and carbs? I have the manual but I'm not sue it has all those details in it. I'm pretty brave these days since I started fixing it (I actually enjoy it) so I may be up for the challenge.

Thanks again!
