I have 1989 Bayliner Capri just bought it. I tested not on the water but with garden hose attached. The engine is Force outboard. The engine is running but no acceleration whilst putting the gear stick on forward or reversed. Is there anything I am missing or this can be accelerated only on high power whilst in the water or lake? Need help please. Thks

Something is definitely wrong.

Check compression and spark on all cylinders.

Examine sparkplugs for excess oil, or dry condition.

Ive seen insects build nest place larva in the ports of carbs over the winter something like that can run fine unloaded but not under load next thought is restriction in the fuel lines or ball valve ive seen a few failed ball valves that felt like they were moving fluid.

Did it rev at all when you tested it? Not trying to insult you, but are you sure the throttle cable is hooked up at the motor?

Are you actually putting it in gear (very bad idea, BTW) or are you using the throttle bypass? On bypass, throttle level is deliberately limited; is is for starting and warming up purposes.

I started the engine with throttle on neutral and push little bit to forward, but the engine was not increasing or getting higher. I opened up the engine and can higher the power by hand. My problem now is for using the throttle on how to increase the power?

Yes I pushed the lever further to the max but still the engine not going up. Do you think if I put to the water, it will work or will run faster?

No,

You have a broke or disconnected throttle cable that is not moving. Open your controls to make sure they are connected correctly as well as at the carb.

Thanks again for all your help. I am new to this hobby and have a limited knowledge about boating - this is my first boat and can't afford to buy a new one. MTboatguy, when you say open controls - is this the throttle lever? When I shifted the lever to forward, the propeller moves or rotates.

Not trying to be condescending but... I think you should get a boater friend to look at the boat and go over it with you and on the first couple of outing. Boating is lots of fun and adventure but you can get into a lot of trouble on the water. Keep in mind you cant walk home if you have issues.

You don't need the engine on the hose or even running to solve your current issue. Just take the cover off, and have someone move the throttle. Watch for the throttle arm to move.

As roffey said, getting someone experienced in boats might be helpful. Are you SURE you are engaging the throttle? If you don't know anyone, even just posting a video on here can be immensely helpful, lots of highly experienced boaters on here that can spot problems.

You have a good point drunkenwater. I will see if the throttle arm will move this weekend. Me and my friend tried to move up the arm from the engine after we took off the cover and raised the engine, but we didn't try the throttle. Thanks

The controls lever at the helm does two things. 1) as you move the lever forward it places the engine "in gear" for forward operation. 2) As you continue to move the lever forward it begins to open the throttle to increase engine and boat speed. Similarly, moving the lever backwards engages reverse. To see if things are working, remove the engine cover and have a helper move the lever forward while you watch the SHIFT linkage on the motor. It should move BEFORE the throttle linkage. Same applies in reverse. As the lever is moved further forward you should see the carburetor and timing linkage moving. If things are not moving as described, check for reversed, broken, or binding cables. It may also be a problem in the control box at the helm.
