i,m replacing the impeller on my 2006 5.0MPI B3 drive and i,m not sure if my gen7 seawater pump is good or if i,m asking for problems mid seaon .

last season no low water alarm and no overheating but visible scoring on the pump housing .

i,m aware of aftermarket wearplates but they are not avsilable in germany , a new pump is expensive as hell here.

whats your opinion ?

best regards

If it was mine I would get a wear plate, but I also can get one easy enough. In your case, its either go with it, or see if a machine shop can mill a couple thousands off.

What about going to a machine shop and asking them to make a wear plate? Might be worth it

giving it to a machine shop for milling the grooves off and resurfacing it will have no adverse effects ?

in germany the backplate alone is over 350 $ ...

Still have the inner surface to deal with though

I would bet your machine shop could make a plate to go inside. It needs to be thin, guessing around 0.015 (.4mm). The rear plate could be easy also using the pump as a guide.

the scoring on the inner side appears to be far less so i will risk to leave it as it is .

its a shame that there are no rebuild kits in germany - they prefer to sell you a new pump...

Yes, nice job what a lathe can do. Can only do that a couple times before it gets to thin for use

i reinstalled the pump and the boat runs like a champ !

what still bothers me a little bit are the for my taste bit low water pressures ...

at idle with boat in the water and cold start i get 1.16 psi on the smartcraft . with a fully warmed up engine the pressure goes down to 0.87 psi at idle

at high rpm,s i get no more than 3.5 psi .

that said i have zero issues with the boat , no alarms or signs of overheat and the engine has plenty of power .

i can let it idle forever and it will sit at 153 deg on smartcraft . forcing it WOT and 4800 rpm,s i never saw more than 156 deg . both manifolds are equally warm , the risers stay pretty cool .

i have the sensor at the power steering cooler and since it shows zero with engine off and the pressures change at different rpm,s i guess the sonsor works correctly .

i heared of bravoitis but since the boat gives zero issues or alarms i maybe overthink a pretty normal situation ?

what are the thresholds for water pressure where smartcraft would throw an alarm ?

best regards

This is from maual 36

The seawater pump sensor measures water inlet pressure or water block pressure. It is located at the seawater pump inlet hose. Normal pressure ranges are 7-34 kPa (1-5 psi) at idle and 48-117 kPa (7-17 psi) at WOT. To check if sensor is within range, the diagnostic tool reading with key ON should be approximately 0.

A malfunction of the seawater pump sensor will set the fault of Seapump CKT Hi, Seapump CKT Lo or Seapump PSI Lo.

thanks alldodge ! i think merc changed 2002 or 2003 the seawater sensor from the pump to the servo cooler with obviously other pressure specs .

do you have a manual with specs for newer engines ?

My 2002 version list what is posted above
My 2006 version says it must be checked with a scanner and engine off must read 0

do i understand you correct :

the 2006 version does not provide any numbers of nominal value for waterpressure ?

ok , thank you much !

i also never found official spec numbers or alarm thresholds for the later models regarding water pressure .

as long as no alarms or overheating occour i will leave it alone .

IMO those water pressure switches (sensors) are the worst thing they ever add, because they are not reliable and have a high failure rate, and expensive. If they would last I would like them more. I installed a gauge to watch mine

the idea of this sensor is not bad - when you burst a hose , blow the impeller or clog the intake while underway you should get an immediate alarm before further bad things happen .

i agree with expensive sensors and failures of the sensor itself .

just of interest : when you remove the sensor and install a gauge - will that not result in an alarm on a guardian controlled engine ?
