I removed the bolt to latch in order to remove stat cover but bolt is too long so I can't get the latch and bolt out of the way. So I am asking for suggestions. I replaced water impeller with kit and decided to flush upper by hooking hose to copper intake. A little dribble out of pee hole . So I want to inspect upper grommet so need access. What gaskets or kits will I need if I have to take off power head. What else to look for ... replace thermostat ?? etc.. Boat is fresh water but been sitting for 15 yrs or so. If I have success on this motor I have to repeat on the 35hp. Same problems. Thanks

Going by memory here so bare with me. As the latch bolt loosens, pull the latch out of the way once the bolt is loose and latch clear of the cowl, the bolt should clear the head. I would not remove the power head if it isn't necessary. Try pushing weed wacker string up the tell tale while the motor is running or hose connected to water tube. If running the motor keep checking that it isn't overheating by holding your hand at the top of the head for a 4 count. You can also back flush with water from the thermostat orifice. Best of luck. Rick.

Yes Rick but the bolt is too long the head won't clear the face of the stat cover.I pressed the situation from all angles .Must have changed in the past. I tried repeatedly fishing wacker line with hose connected to the water tube no success (a little dribble but not sustained .The water flows out of hose on bottom of cowl bottom from a block on side of motor. Thermostat orifice? Is that only accessable if I can remove the cover? Hope to find the solution thanks for the assist. Tim

Well that's no fun. I guess the power head must come off then. Rick.

You do not need to pull the powerhead to service that thermo. Loosen the rear lower cowl mount(s) and the lower cowl should drop enough.

You can also pull the head and deal with it that way. Pulling the head does make it easier to clean of the gasket surfaces.

Please post a pic, so that I understand you correctly.

first pul out lever latch and usnscreav latch bolt at the same time.

pul out latch and now you get acces to termostst cover bolts(down one),

termostst is with rubber gasket(like oring), metal cup and spring.cover is with gasket.
i played with puting back all staf but quite.its so small rum to bolt back this cover and hold back spring, cover gasket
so i puled of the head,
assembled termostat cover, cleaned some sand from water chanels leading to termostat chamber.
flatten the head put the head gasket and bolt head back.
