I don't think you will find a Martin in the $200 dollar range. Martin however does have a Sigma line of lower priced quality guitars that might work for you. There are lots of quality brands such as Guild,Fender,Gibson,Gretsch,Ibanez,Washburn,Ovation,Takamine,Taylor,Yamaha.... BUT there are many el'cheapo brands that aren't worth a crap. A quality guitar will hold its value or increase in value over time. Also does your son already play or is this just something he wants to try?

Acoustic electric guitar advise

My son wants one. I am willing to spend around 200$ for a used one. All advise on brand/model appreciated. The amp will be bought later unless I get a steal of a package deal.

Martin brand is what he has been talking about. I am totaly ignorant on the subject.

I agree with the brands One More Cast has listed.Takamine makes a pretty good lower end acoustic/electric for around that price range. I would recommend getting the best plain acoustic for the $200 and worry about an electric model later down the line. Cheap acoustic/electrics tend to disappoint when amped.

Finding a Martin for $200.00 is a stretch for sure. As OMC states, have a look at a Takamine. I own their copy of the D-28 Martin and I'm impressed at the quality and sound. The sound quality is impressive and the action smooth. The Takamine isn't the same as my Martin D-35 (1975), which is not surprising, but a good instrument to be sure.

I have a fender 270SCE cutaway acoustic/electric which maI traded in a telecaster for. The electric thing was fun as a kid but not convenient after the family came so I decided to mellow out a bit.

There will indeed be someone to take your $200 for a guitar that plays music but if your son has 5 years under his belt it may not be much of an improvement over what he already has. Perhaps you can tell him you will pay the $200 and spot him a few extra sheckles with the understanding that he gets a small part time job to pay you back the amount above and beyond the $200 figure.

Kevin

With guitar's, most of the time "you get what you pay for"...

FWIW, I'd nix the used guitar idea... Chances are good that a used guitar could need repairs that would put you past what a good new guitar would cost..

There are quite a few very good new instruments out there available for around the $300 mark... Ibanez, Washburn, Epiphone, Fender, just to name a few..

As for Martins, they're kinda like real estate.. They don't depriciate, only go up in price... Least expensive new Martins start around $700, thru........ $ $

I dont know Snapper........I bought many a used guitar and other equipment. If you really look it over and can deal with the Charicter traits ie: nicks, scratches and dings, well used could be the way to go. $200 bucks dont get you much used or new.

Well, with the above + my own research I beleive 200$ is bare min.

I also know that if we are patient a good used quality one will become available.

He has now suggested a Samick brand?. In the next couple weeks we will learn enough about guitars to make an educated decision on which make/models.

So if we don't find one before Christmas we will give him a rain check that we will use to snap up a good one within 6 months. Meantime he can add $ to the pot as PAkev suggested.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will update you all on when (if) we "steal" one.

Re: Acoustic electric guitar advise

Check out www.acousticguitar.com and go to their forums. They are a lot like this one. There is also a section where you can buy/sell/trade.
The begginers section talks a lot about inexpensive guitars. You might be able to find a good used Big Baby Taylor for about what you want to spend. Check Ebay. I bought one for a camping and find myself playing it more than my more expensive guitars. It is 15/16ths size so it is slightly smaller than a full size dreadnaught. You would have to add a pickup to it if you want
to plug in. Above all if it sounds and plays good to HIM, that is what matters most. Good luck and happy shopping.!

Dave
