It's a buyers market. Get too hasty and your more likely to end up w/buyers remorse. If price is right for the boat you like and the sea trials work out, go for that one.

Re: act fast and scoop up this boat?

personally the recent overhaul does more to scare me off than entice me.... I'll take a good compression test and documented service history on a CLEAN boat and engine over any recent work.... check it out.... make sure the transom is rock solid and not deformed or tweaked...make sure the floor is COMPLETELY rock solid... stick your hand under the floor in any ski locker or access hole... dig in with your finger nails.... clean, dry and hard? or slimy and wet? If you can scrape out slimy bits of wood that's a BAD sign..... Look for ANYTHING that looks out of place.... slightly raised spot on floor with newer carpet = rotted floor bandaid.... If you find anything that doesn't belong or doesn't look original, figure out WHY it is there.

Do a compression test on the engine and DO A SEA TRIAL... don't just run it in the driveway.

I like the Mercs and that 115 is closer to 135 hp.What year is the motor? You have to check the transom out for rot.Take a pick into one of the existing holes if possible and see if you get dry shavings or mush.If there is no way of checking that way stand on the back of the motor and jump up n down and see if it flexes. Then you can try tapping around and listen for any dead spots. The less holes drilled the better unless properly sealed. Is there any paperwork with the head replacement last year? 2500 max more like 2000.

i know bowrider is not ideal for west coast ocean boating but assuming he DOES have these receipts.. this looks appealing

Everything else aside, make sure 16' is big enough for you. I had a 16', and it was tight with 2 adults and 1 child.

Everybody has pretty much covered the "what to look for's," and all that being said ... $2,500 for that boat (with all of the stuff he's saying comes with it) is in the "reasonable" category. It's worth looking at - and running out on the water.

Re: act fast and scoop up this boat?

Okay so i asked a few preliminary questions. this is the email i got back, i do understand that (considering where i live and having to get insurance for the day etc etc) it is a bit to ask to take a boat out for a test drive, i know you guys will probably strongly disagree but any time ive had someone agree to it, the boat has been sold before i got a chance to take it out. so im kind of unsure what to do, im okay with taking risks, but not being stupid..

ME:
Hi, boat still available? Do you have the receipts for the motor work? Has the impeller been replaced recently? What year is the motor? Does it have a stereo and do you have the papers for the trailer and boat? Also how is the condition of the transom and hull? Could we test drive it? Thanks!

OWNER:
nice list of questions
Yes still available
yes to the receipts on the motorwork
motor is mid 80's
has a stereo and yes I have all the paperwork
Boat is in good shape
Not going to put it in the water but I will run the engine with dogs ears and hose

Explain that the "test drive" will be the final step and that if it passes all of your other tests then you wish to sea trial.... you will have CASH in hand and will pay on the spot upon successful completion of the sea trial. If he refuses, KEEP SHOPPING

You have ALL WINTER to find the right deal.

I WOULD buy a boat without a sea trial but only if I was getting it for 20% or less of what it was normally worth

sorry, but which boat is this referring to??

hope it's not the one in the first link, as that blueband is a '72-'75 model, going JUST on the cowl decals...need a serial number to be certain, that goes for all of them anyway,
if l'm on the wrong page..or chapter...disregard my ramblings
