Well some of you guys saw my barn find I scored recently a 1976 22 Chieftain outboard. Question have any of you 22' guys weighed your boat Islander Chieftain would think the hull is basically the same. I am looking at trailers and want to know my weight. If you have a weight please tell all that is included like i/o or ob size and fuel gallons and # batteries. Thanks

For your rig you can prolly ballpark it at the 3000# mark, loaded with gear and fuel. Plus or minus a couple hundred depending on how you build it out and how much stuff you bring along.

Your average tandem axle trailer should handle that rig just fine;)

putting it another way, any trailer big enough for a 22' boat will comfortably haul your big tintub. the vast majority of boats, for which trailers are engineered, are glassers, and glassers in that size range weigh, what, maybe 4-5000?

My SS201 fueled and ready to go on the trailer is 3400lbs, it doesn't have the super structure yours does, but is about 10"s wider and deeper so should be close,

Dozer does that 3400lbs include the trailer weight as well and what is your power pkg?

"ready to go on the trailer" sounds pretty clear that it doesn't include the trailer....?

I think the guys provided a good number. Here's a bit more info, which may help you.

I have a 1974 22' Chieftain. Here are the calculations I used to determined boat weight:
Hull Weight - 1640 lbs (from 1972 brochure)
Engine 165 Inline 6 - 706 lbs (from 1972 brochure)
54 Gallons Fuel - 328 lbs (54 x 6.073)
10 Gallons Water - 80 lbs (10 x 8.0)
Total = 2,754 lbs

I then added additional 20% of weight for people (people will be on a boat that is on a trailer e.g., prep work), fishing gear, electronics, batteries, kicker motor, etc., which adds 550 lbs. You may need to adjust for your own situation.

Total boat weight = 3,305 lbs rounding up. A trailer that can carry 4,000 lbs should be safe and give you nice margin.

I am thinking it means just the opposite..... how does one weigh a boat that's not on the trailer???I would think his weight is that of a boat ready to launch and run sitting on the trailer ..on a scale the brochures are saying the dry hull weights are 1200-1500 lbs...ad an 800 lbs inboard and you are still less than 2400......throw in another 300 lbs 2700 lbs....is my guess....add a 600 lb trailer and you are getting up to that 3300 lb range......one of the most popular axels is the 3500 lb variant.... bob

That weight is including the trailer, which if I remember right is just under 1000 lbs. I have the 4.3 LX Mercruiser.

OK, i stand corrected. i assumed it was so heavy due to all that extra luminum in the Vhull.

my 21' 1984 Cheiftain is 4,100 on the axles, estimate 500lb tongue weight. This is with a 140 I/O, 38 gall fuel, 15hp 2 stroke kicker, halibut weights/ down rigger weights (est . 40lbs). Two bikes, dog crate, other fishing tackle.

Re: Actual hull weight of 22' starcraft

is it true that the trailers capacity needs to INCLUDE the weight of the trailer itself, in addition to the fully rigged boat sitting on it????

I believe that it true, usually, at least up here in the great white north, GVW is based on the tires load rating. Most come with load range C which is 1320lbs each, so 2640 GVW on a single axel and 5280 on a tandem.

Re: Actual hull weight of 22' starcraft

Thanks for all the responses especially Nomrwrk for the specific hull weight from the brochure. So what I have is hull 1640,honda ob 400,
gas 350,batteries 100, gear etc 250 and a kicker 60. Total weight 2800lbs. I am considering big single axles and tandem trailers. Sounds like a single is doable especially since I usually gas the rig up near the ramp. I know a tandem rides smoother but weighs about 500 lbs more and needs more room to turn. I pull with a fullsize truck and was hoping for a trailer with no brakes. Load under 3000 lbs here in Va brakes not required. Brakes and saltwater no likey.

Dozer singles I am looking at tires rated 1760 lbs 14" and I can get a load range D rated higher.

Re: Actual hull weight of 22' starcraft

wow thats a lot of gas!!!!!!!!!!!!! i dont think you really WANT a single axel... I have a boat and trailer COMBO that comes in on the scales at 2750 bare bones rigging wise...it is a 3500 lb axle and the tires are 15 " 1750 capacity per tire...and guess what.....that rig eats tires....

i usually load it with 18 gallons of gas and maybe 300 lbs of gear( anchors, food and misc stuff). I am thinking to try and find some tires rated for 2000 lbs each..or add another axel....bob

Bob my 19 arima rig weighs this much now and is on a single axle with no problems. The key is make sure your rig is aligned and get radials. Lots of trailers come with Loadstar tires and they are only good for a couple thousand miles. Pure junk. If you get 15" radials bet you can get 20k miles out of them easily. I think there are plenty of manufacturers of D load range tires in 15". In 14" Kumho is the only one I know of lots of good reviews on them.

my trailer has the axel mounted on a sub frame that bolts in a fixed series of bolt holes on the frame.....there really is no alignment adjustment. my wear issues seem to be from air pressure and weight.....I have to pump the tires to 50 psi or more...to keep from wearing the outer edges only. I have measure diagonally from my hubs to the coupler when I first mounted that axle.....dead on.....bob
