See picture below. How big of an issue is this? With the high rise of the exhaust elbows, is there really a risk of water getting back up and in to the exhaust? This is on the starboard side.
Not so much BUT, that "flapper" WILL eventually break off and either lodge itself in the lower Y-pipe area OR vanish and no longer be doing it's job.
I would replace both of them.
Good point. I guess this is one more thing to add to the list when I do my engine replacement this winter. Thanks Rick.
My 94 Four Winns Horizon 230 5.8 had the flappers break off and one disappeared but the other caused a blockage at the transom that didnt allow my boat to rev past 2500 on the water. At idle on the hose it ran right up to redline so it was a sneaky thing to find. It wasnt visable with the elbow removed as the flapper was out of sight flat up against the transom hole for the exhaust. Finally took the drive off and looked in to see the flapper lodged in there. For my boat, at least, there is a service bulletin that says just to take them out and fill the holes in the pipe with sillicone. I have done that and ran it two seasons and had no water reversion problem.
My boat had a seized engine when i bought it. I found a melted flapper on the same side that had alot of rust in the cylinders above the pistons. Different setups but the flappers were put in for a reason. Just my humble opinion while not being an expert or familiar with your setup.
Yeah, Ill pick up a couple new ones. I just wish the only source for them wasnt an Ebay retailer wanting $40 shipped each. lol
