adapting 75hp 15" stinger mid to v4 cflow

can it be done? the mid sections look similar at first glance.

what about adapting a v6 looper mid to v4 cross?

I know this question may seem "out there" but there is a reason behind the madness.

Rodbolt's right. The midsection and lower unit's look similar but the L3's are smaller than the V4s - sort of like 7/8ths scale.

Making a shorty mid section can be done -- and its not that difficult -- but what are you trying to accomplish? The reason I ask is because sometimes a short exhaust, like in the 15" - 17" range doesnt breathe as good as the 20".

Besides, if you arent using a Strangler type lower it doesnt help either.

Re: adapting 75hp 15" stinger mid to v4 cflow

thanks, they looked similar just wanted to confirm

Dhadley, ive put together a 14' hydrostream vandal with a tweeked 140hp crossflow. its been a fun ongoing project and I was just thinking of something else i could do to keep me out of trouble this winter(and having a lower cg is never a bad thing). having a shorter lower would let me lower the engine down on the jackplate to a normal height (right now the motor sticks up pretty high because the propshaft is 1-1/2 below the bottom)

I know omc never made a 15" mid for the v4 with the exception of some rare gt and x115 pieces. i did find two x115 lowers and mids but the prices are a little high.($2000)

ive seen cutdown mids for v6 looper and v6 crossflows. if one ever goes up for sale id buy it up, that is if a v6 mid would bolt to a v4 (arent just the adaptor plated differnt?)

also madefi.com sells the midsection, but idont have the expirtese in welding aluminum to weld a driveshaft or the clampbracket and steering tube

What rpm are you looking for from your crossflow V4?

There's some more left. Are you running stock reeds?

Are you running the 23 Silver Streak SRX?

Re: adapting 75hp 15" stinger mid to v4 cflow

im running boyesens, with the 1-5/16 carbs (havent run across a set of 1-3/8 yet) i cleaned up the parting lines in the intake, and the exhaust is dried out now.

the silver streak is the early teflon coated prop? mine is just polished stainless. im going to bring it to my prop guy DAH over the winter for some work

with all this im running 65 and change gps, if i hit 70mph id be happy

The Silver Streak props were just that -- silver (painted). The teflon SRX props were for V6's. Are you running a V6 propshaft in a V4 case? Or a V6 case? The reason for asking is to know the set up and gear ratio.

I wouldn't get hung up on the 1 3/8 carbs just yet. The 1 5/16 will get more rpm than 6200.

Tell us what you mean by a "tweeked" motor.

BTW -- DAH does a good job with props. Good folks.

Re: adapting 75hp 15" stinger mid to v4 cflow

im using a v4 case with a v4 propshaft

tweeked:
basically i took the intake and exhaust manifolds off and ground down all the rough parting lines. i also dryed out the exhaust to make more room for exhaust gasses. next thing i was going to do was cut the tuner down to 7". i also radiused the reed cages a tiny tiny bit

I wouldn't worry about the tuner. That motor will turn more rpm than that without messing with the tuner. In fact you probably need the tuner length to turn more.

Have you opend up the exhaust area in the gearcase yet?

no i had not even heard of that before now. In fact i never even looked to see what it was like in there. is there some specific material that should be removed?

Re: adapting 75hp 15" stinger mid to v4 cflow

Take the lower unit off and look straight down into the exhaust area. You will see where the exhaust passage closes severly. Thats the material we remove. Most guys drill holes straight into the exhaust from the outside. that lets noise out but does nothing to remove the restriction.

Once you open that area the exhaust can go down and then out thru the normal passage or go straight out just above the anti-ventilation plate (cavatation plate).

Gotta warn ya -- its loud. It'll give you a headache fairly quickly. With a helmet its not near as bad but I doubt you wear one -- how about a jacket? And I'm not talking about a sissy ski vest. And dont forget to hook up the lanyard too.

ill have to check it out. i always hook up my lanyard and wear my lifeline during high speed runs. i dont wear a helmet, im afraid of bucketing. i think i can deal with the noise i drive a mustang with noisy mufflers every day in the summer. it cant be much worse

What speed do those 14' Vandals fly at? Thought it was about 70mph. Ahhh, I'm just envious...

Good for you!! We see way too many guys out there fooling around without good jackets. Lifeline is one of, if not the, best. I agree with the bucketing deal. If you dont have the helmet straps, it could happen. The bad thing about the straps is that they restrict your head movement side to side.

See if you can locate any gearcase thats off and look at it. Youll see right away where the restriction is.

Does you life jacket have a neck collar? They'll help with the bucketing issue. Having been thrown in the drink a time or five, I can tell you that it worked alright for me... I've got a Security jacket with the high rear collar...
- Scott

Re: adapting 75hp 15" stinger mid to v4 cflow

safety is #1 now, i had a boat go down a few years ago and it scared the &^%* of me! luckily i grabbed a jacket that had floated out of the boat, i wasnt injured either. my new boat is equipped with a foot throttle, hydraulic steering, and trim on a turn signal type mechanism and lanyard. i dont think id want any boat without a pedal or wheel mounted trim anymore, its just so much more convienent.

dhadley, i got a buddy with a v4 torn apart for rebuild, ill go check out the restricted area.

chinewalker you confused me for a second, what a coincidence i use that "handle" on a different boating forum.
