add charging system to 9.8?

hey all, just wondering if you guys thought it would be practical to add a charging system to a 9.8 kicker motor ser 715xxx. i'm not running a ton of electric acc but i would hate to find out the hard way that i have a flat battery. do i need to add anything eles besides a stator and rectifier? on the belgium secton of the online diagrams they also have a voltage regulator...is this something i need to incorporate as well? i realize that without one the rpms will dictate the output volts, but will this hurt anything? also, what guage battery leads should i use? any help would be great (and yes i have searched threw pages of posts) thanks
